"D"eaf athletes?

Is there any reason why the first sentence talks about the games being for "Deaf athletes"? I was given the impression that Deaf with a capital D is used by some to talk about a distinct Deaf culture, whereas the qualification for the Deaflympics seems pretty clearly based upon hearing impairment only. Hi, the capitalisation here is referencing an athlete who participates in Deaf sport, sport specifically organised and provided for deaf people. 80.47.89.62 (talk) 16:34, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

General cleanup suggestions

Note that the template above was deleted from template namespace as a result of there not being a single article linked therein that meets the notability guidelines. Not a single one of the games had a third party reliable source available for it, and all were deleted or redirected here. I would like to make a couple of suggestions, lest this article be deleted as well - It's obvious that a reasonable amount of effort has been put into it:

  1. Our notability guidelines require that an article have multiple independent sources that back up the subject's claim to notability. Without them, articles are often (and should be) deleted.
  2. When this article reaches a size that renders it difficult to download and read or when it reaches a point where any single set of games is discussed at such length that it gives the topic undue weight, feel free to split them out. You could throw in a paragraph or two of strong, sourced prose about 5 or 10 of the games before you ever reach that point. Note that each split off article also requires multiple independent sources.
  3. Do not recreate the deleted templates until a reasonable number of the games have been split off. When recreating deleted content, the right way to do it is to tell the admins that a handful of the linked articles exist again and meet WP:NOTE. At that point they can restore Template:Deaflympics or Template:Deaflympic Games for further editing. I must say, though: Barring the discovery of 15-20 independent sources for the total topic and barring several months/a year's growth in this article, I can't say that I see this happening successfully anytime soon.

Remember, meeting the good article guidelines and featured article guidelines is the ultimate goal here - Quality wins over quantity. As it is, this article fails to include a single independent source, and risks meeting our criterion for deletion long before it achieves good article status. International Sign

Hi...I think reference might be made to International Sign (IS), as it is (was?) used at the Deaflympics according to the (uncited) International Sign page, and IS is not, as I understand, used in many other forums. Anyone know whether it is still being used and if we could therefore make mention of it? Thanks. --Brettz9 (talk) 22:18, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
