[Untitled][edit]

This article says he died in the Siberian gulag in 1950, but the Night of the Murdered Poets article says he was shot in in the basement of Lubyanka prison in Moscow on Aug 12 1952. Which is correct? Speciate 03:55, 10 January 2007 (UTC)speciate[reply]

Family Mashber[edit]

You might want to add that the Family Mashber is in fact three books, or rather three volumes of one story. Unfortunately we only have the first two extant and these were found only recently. It is said that when the Soviet authorities burst into his home to arrest him and demanded all his manuscripts he told them the third volume was hidden somewhere they would never find it. Some commentators think he meant it was in his head, others hope that it may still be found one day... All this is related in the intro to Wolf's translation of the book, which is a masterpiece... Picture of der Nister and others[edit]

I have troubles to identify the persons on the picture in the article. Actually, I am only 100% sure about Marc Chagall (Moishe Shagal) sitting all down the stairs. The description of the picture says:
"The painter Marc Chagal (front) with teachers and children [...] To the left of Marc Chagall (bottom right) is writer Zvi Girshkan. In the second row from left to right: writer Simha Tomshinsky, Ukrainian Yiddish poet David Gofshtain (aka Hofstein), composer Yoel Engel, and literary critic Yekhezkel Dobrushin. Sitting left behind Chagall is the Yiddish writer Der Nister [...]".
This is very confusing. Descriptions like "to the left of Marc Chagall", "in the second row" or "sitting left behind Chagall" do not make any sense for me. There's no one sitting left of Marc Chagall and it is not clear what the second row is, because for example I identify Yoel Engel as second from left and not the third person or Gofshtain as forth not second. Is there anyone out there that can help with a clear and unambigous assignment of the pictured people (at least the one known)? I would appriciate it a lot! Thanks.
