The load will remain in place and not lower under the force of gravity until the chain is pulled.[edit]

This assertion is only true if there is enough friction in the system, which there usually is precisely because of R and r being close the differential force is small but if friction is very low or disappears and or the ratio R/r grows then the system will need a brake or the load will descend. 79.157.230.2 (talk) 17:33, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
