The plot summary starts off incorrectly. Celia is married to Jorge del Pino and during this time, she takes on Gustavo, the Spaniard, as a lover. After he leaves for Spain, she apologizes profusely to Jorge, asking for his forgiveness. Since Jorge is madly in love with his wife, though sad, he agrees and the two resume their lives. However, Jorge is still very upset and he does intend to punish her for her infidelity. His mother is cruel and condescending to Celia, but since they do not live near each other, she doesn't pose as extreme of a problem as this plot summary makes her out to be. However, Celia's depression and Jorge's frequent business trips (which should be noted are not because he too is adulterous) without him (no doubt to induce emotion pain, as "absence makes the heart grow fonder"), make her hate the baby, Lourdes, whom she has growing inside of her. When Jorge returns from one of these trips, after Lourdes is born (during which he was not home), Celia contemptibly thrusts the baby at him and exclaims that she wants nothing to do with her. She begins to go slightly insane, severely emotionally hurt, and withdrawn, and Jorge gets worried. He finally sends her to an asylum where the doctors subject her to powerful electroshock therapy and various medicines to make her forget her anger towards Jorge and her hatred of her daughter. The years she spends in the asylum allows Jorge and Lourdes to grow very, very close and for Lourdes to develop a certain distance from her mother.
If someone who has read this book, either in Spanish or English, could fix this plot summary (especially the introduction above) and by including the proper details, that would be fantastic.
