Number of Chromosomes

[edit]

Can we say that this bacterium has three chromosomes? Obviously the other two are much smaller than the biggest one, but at which point do you actually talk about a chromosome or a "chromosome-like DNA carrier", in particular if it is vital for the survival of the organism? There are even plasmids that carry suicide genes, e. g. if they are lost, the bacterium may also die because it no longer synthesizes an important repressor. But I am mostly just curious in an absolute definition here at which step you call one DNA molecule a chromosome, but not the other(s). 2A02:8388:1600:C80:BE5F:F4FF:FECD:7CB2 (talk) 03:24, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sinorhizobium melilotiEnsifer meliloti – Senior synonym should be used. Refer to argument used in recent mover of the genus page Ensifer. YorkshireExpat (talk) 15:35, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
