Proposed merger
[edit]M249 Squad Automatic Weapon appears to contain a lot of generic information about the Minimi, that belongs or is duplicated here. I don't believe there is enough M249 SAW-specific information in that article for it to stand alone after merger. M249 SAW should be a section of this article and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon should redirect here. Yorkshire Phoenix (talk) 11:49, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
For i totaly agree. if it isnt merged it proves that for aevery varaint there hs too be a artical. also i think weapons should be named what ther original manufactur called them(Esskater11)
I second the opinon.Paulwharton, 21:14PM, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. I'm going to rewrite the entire article with a nice development and technical description and will list the M249 as one of its many variants. Koalorka 20:33, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- FOR - I did the merge but it was reverted because of "lack of consent" (even though it had been proposed with little opposition several times. I'll need your support to merge the two articles on the Talk:M249 Squad Automatic Weapon page. Koalorka 05:17, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- FOR -- However please let the tags play themselves out. There was a legitemate objection that the M249 was significantly different, however I believe that FN markets the M249 as the MINIMI interchangeably. --Asams10 11:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- AGAINST - You'll lose too much specific info on the M249. D.E. Watters 20:47, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- AGAINST - For the same reasons as I oppose the merger of the M240 and FN MAG articles. The systems are marketed different, have spawned separate variant lines, and the history of the M249 and its adoption is too much for the article on the FN Minimi. They have separate histories and in many ways separate developments. I understand the reasonable logic for a merge, but I agree with Daniel Watters here that you will lose a lot of important information if you treat them as the same and leave out the important history. -- Thatguy96 15:49, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
If the CETME Ameli was fitted with a magazine insert under the belt feed insert, Will it be more advanced then the Minimi?.User:EX STAB, 19:50PM, 2nd April 2007 (UTC)
What is your definition of advanced? Koalorka (talk) 08:09, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
Light machine gun vs. Squad automatic weapon
[edit]It says that the M-249/FN MINIMI is a light machine gun but I would think that it is a squad automatic weapon.(Kind of self explanatory in the US Army designation M-249 SAW.) King Toast 11:38, December 30, 2007 (UTC)
"Squad Automatic Weapon" is a US designation for what is known universally as a light machine gun. Koalorka (talk) 18:01, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
The weapon that inspired the MINIMI?
[edit]Does anyone know if it's true that the MINIMI was modelled/inspired by the Stoner 63 weapon system? 121.218.25.164 (talk) 10:41, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- All weapons are at least partly inspired by all prior known weapons... however in this case I can say that the one wasn't inspired by the other. This is not a forum, by the way. This page is meant for discussion of the article. --Asams10 (talk) 15:29, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
MINIMI or Minimi?
[edit]This is short for, Minimitrailleuse, correct? So, why is it in all caps? We had the discussion on GLOCK vs. Glock and Glock won, correct? So, why is MINIMI like it is? I'll give it a week for discussion and move the page. Any comments? --Asams10 (talk) 02:03, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- Because it is an abbreviation. GLOCK is not, and was simply corporate marketing. Koalorka (talk) 02:05, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
It's an abbreviation, yes, but abbreviations are not all capitalized. Is there a Wikipedia standard for this? --Asams10 (talk) 02:06, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- Do we start calling the M2HB the M2hb now? Is there a standard against it? Koalorka (talk) 02:08, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, no, because the abbreviation "HB" stands for Heavy Barrel. However, the letters in "MINIMI" do not each stand for something. I don't know if there is a standard for or against it... was hoping somebody from the Wikipedia CABAL might jump in and lay down the law... or is that Cabal? --Asams10 (talk) 02:15, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- I don't really see it that way. MINIMI is both an abbreviation of an actual word and a correct marketing name used by FN. I had the same dilemma with the AMELI LMG. This is to indicate to non-native speakers who would probably assume it is the full name that there is another extended meaning behind both names. Koalorka (talk) 02:35, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
The articles that might apply are Wikipedia:Capitalization, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters), and Abbreviation. --Asams10 (talk) 02:54, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- I did check those out and didn't find anything relevant. It just states that we should not over capitalize and I think I made a decent case for the MINIMI name. Koalorka (talk) 03:10, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
I did note the Interpol example. That's the closest I could come to support the "Minimi" variation. --Asams10 (talk) 03:32, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Minimi 7.62
[edit]Along with the images the FN reps sent me a PDF spec sheet of their new 7.62 Minimi. I don't believe it's published yet, so I can't really cite it, but that is where I obtained the performance data. Just an FYI. Koalorka (talk) 01:38, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Images removed
[edit]Looks like my email exchange with the FN reps did not meet Commons requirements, the images were all removed by an admin and I was threatened with a block. I don't know how I can be more clear about the consent. I sent them a request with licensing information, they responded by sending me the photographs.... I can't be more clear than that. I've given up right now, they've even removed the Izhmash images from waay back. Koalorka (talk) 15:28, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Georgian Army
[edit]Since the GAF is training togheter with the Swedish Armed forces, Georgia received an unknow amount of FN Minimis in the past two years.
- This needs to be cited. Koalorka (talk) 16:31, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Open Bolt
[edit]Quote from article: "The Minimi fires from an open bolt, which reduces the danger of a round cooking off after extended periods of continuous fire, since a cartridge is only momentarily introduced into the chamber prior to ignition, and the movement of the bolt and bolt carrier forces air through the chamber and barrel after each shot, ventilating the barrel and removing heat."
I don't think the last part of this statement referring to ventilation is entirely correct. Open bolt operation does not enable, and is not linked to, the movement of the bolt carrier/bolt to force air through the barrel. Reciprocating parts...erm...reciprocate whether the weapon fires from an open or closed bolt and so would move air in the same manner. It would be more correct to say that firing from an open bolt enables better cooling and ventilation because the working parts remain to the rear between bursts. The open breech enables air movement through the barrel and around the breech, which would not occur to the same extent if the working parts were forward. Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page
[edit]Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
