Commons category for images

One of only three landscapes?

I think what the referenced BBC article should have said is 'natural WHS' rather than 'cultural', and not 'landscape' - after all Blaenavon WHS includes landscape in its title. in any case the BBC does mention 'on the UK mainland' which caters to the fact that there are other such UK WHSs not on the 'UK mainland' (which itself is a problematic term). Not sure where you get that statistic from, Murgatroyd49; it is not in the BBC article that I'm looking at. Rather the article says there are "121 landscapes worldwide which have been awarded the [WHS] designation". My issue here is with the BBC; it is not immediately obvious what the writer of the BBC article means by 'landscape' in this context, that is not a definition used by UNESCO, the body responsible for their designation (which incidentally lists 35 WHSs in the UK - see https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/gb ). 'Cultural' site, 'natural' site and 'mixed' are UNESCO categories of WHS but 'landscape' is not - see https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/ for example. thanks Geopersona (talk) 06:26, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
