Frank J Bart was born Frank J Conway younger brother of Albert Michael Conway in Ireland. They were raised in an catholic orphanage and transferred to another near Schoon Lake in NY. They ran from the orphange to NYC when Albert was 13 and Frank was 7 because the priest rented them out to local farmers who were abusive. Frank was turned down by the army for age and took the last name Bart from a clothing store in West NY, NJ. With the new name and birth date he enlisted at a different location. Sgt York made the comment that the little man looked more like a Boy Scout. In addition to the CMH he also was awarded 6 purple hearts, silver star, at least 2 bronze stars, the French, belgian and american crosses of gallantry along with other awards. He was the third most decorated soldier in WW1. After the war he was homeless and unable to gain employment. He was spotted weraing the lapel pin by Mayor Hague who made him a clerk in the Hudson County Courts from which he retired. He was a lifelong batchelor and lived with his brother Albert and sister-in law in Union City until Albert died in 1947 and Adele died in 1957. He then lived in Lynhurst with his nephew Elmer until his passing. Albert was my great grandfather and all his awards are currently held by the son of his nephew Robert (Bobbie) Conway in Melbourne, Fl.
