Silly removal of flags!

[edit]

Someone is removing the flags of the Chilean ethnic group infoboxes.

He says that some French Chileans might be of Swiss or Belgian origin, if so they would not be French Chileans but Belgian Chileans and Swiss Chileans!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.155.79.90 (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And I'll continue removing them, as they're contrary to style guidelines governing hte use of national flags in Wikipedia; they're especially inappropriate in cases where, as with the Syrians and "Palestinians", the population in question has nothing to do with the current state other than geographic location; ditto the Greeks, many of whom came from Smyrna (in today's Turkey, then in the Ottoman Sultanate, and never part of Greece), and the Germans (who may come from almost a dozen countries outside of Germamy). There are good reasons the flags are inappropriate on ethnic group pages; please stop re-inserting them as I, or another experienced editor mindful of guidelines, will simply remove them again.....If you were a registered user a rule known as WP:3RR would also apply in the case of more than two reversals. There are better ways you could improve these articles than simply decorating them in national flags, most of which are inappropriate (again, the Irish flag on the Irish Chilean page is inappropriate because many came from Ulster, which is not part of the Irish Republic and never has been). Please stop using national flags as ethnic emblems; they will always be removed; and rest assured I can be more obstinate than you can....I don't mean to be unwelcoming, but I invite you to work on improving such articles, instead of just decorating them....Skookum1 (talk) 22:08, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Swiss and Belgian settlers in Chile have never been registered as French (nor Germans nor Italians nor Dutch for that record) and they have never been mistaken as such. That's really unnecessary to remove the flags.--Elnuevomercurio (talk) 19:51, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
