Trivia Section
I will concede the fireplace incident, although my brother was an eye-witness. However, I think GN's status as a Harvard dropout is significant both in itself and as an example of the phenomenon in which many Harvard dropouts, including Bill Gates and a few of my TA's, went on to become Microsoft millionaires. Also, GN was never called "Feet" or "Birds" in school, and that line certainly qualified as silly, so I removed it. Fbagatelleblack 17:25, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Programmer?
I was under the impression that Newell was the lead programmer at Valve, the page mentions nothing about it and don't know if I'm mistaken. LikuX 08:40, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
PS3 Bias
What's with the section that is nothing but bias against the PS3? It doesn't even specify which "port" they are talking about. I know Newell has said that in the past, but he's said the same thing about the 360. It's his rant on next-gen in general. http://www.joystiq.com/2005/07/25/gabe-newell-not-happy-with-next-gen-consoles/ Hadiz (talk) 20:36, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- Edited to clarify which port we are talking about. AlistairMcMillan (talk) 14:50, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
I must say that I do find that section to be less than objective - it's effectively laying the blame for a perceived inadequate game on an person from a completely different development house. Gabe Newell really had nothing to with the quality of the ps3 release, nor should he be held accountable for it. Also of note is that the PS3 release of the Orange Box had an average reviewer score of 89% of metacritic, while this score is not quite as high as the pc and xbox releases it is enough to make it the 4th highest ranked game on the ps3. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/halflife2theorangebox - Funkeystu (talk) 08:42, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
It should clearly be edited to show his overall distaste in current-gen console technology, or if anything, moved to another article (like Valve itself or The Orange Box). Right now this has a clear fanboy slant. -TonicBH (talk) 04:42, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Windows "producer"; other roles at Microsoft
From the article with the producer quote, Newell describes his role "[using] games industry parlance". Likely, this means he was a project manager, and given what I've read of Microsoft's management of projects, likely one of several. I'm interested more in what he did at Microsoft after those three releases, though. Depending on how you count them, the third release could have been Windows/x86 (2.1; released 1988) or Windows 3.0 (released 1990). Did he work at all on 3.1x, NT, or Windows 95? --coldacid (Talk|Contrib) 13:43, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Son reportedly enjoys Counter-Strike?
What is this? What on God's green earth does this have to do with Gabe Newell? Millions of people enjoy Counter-Strike, and one of them is *gasp* related to him? No crap! This piece should be removed immediately. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.190.157.74 (talk) 04:16, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Valve Task Force Re-vitalization
Attention, all contributors to the Valve Task Force and the articles it constitutes!
I am here to announce that I will be re-vitalizing the Valve Task Force, aimed at universally improving articles constituting Valve Corporation, their employees, associates and products. This specific task force has been dormant for quite some time and with two very notable releases coming out this year, I feel like this is the appropriate time to re-stimulate the general aim of this group. For those who are not already members of the Valve Task Force, feel free to add your name to our members list and contribute to whatever articles you feel your contributions may prove beneficial for. Valve, its products and notable employees have proven to be essential to the progression of the video game industry, so I'd like to make a call of arms for this cause. - The article has been semi-protected since October 2009. That knocks the vandalism down to a level that is not "good" but still allows numerous good edits to proceed. Any vandals that do sneak through are (almost) obviously a chronic problem (and on balance perhaps an overall detriment to WP) rather than drive-by kids, so WP:AIV is where to request they be blocked. - Certainly not. Gabe Newell is far from hated; he is rather popular, being that he has assisted in the development of many Steam-Games, Window Platforms, console platforms and other cetra. Gabe Newell is often subject to many cruel jokes in the Valve community, but Gabe is far from "hated". Gabe Newell is actually one of my favorite figures in todays society. He is also a admired figure of many Valve fans such as myself, despite the cruel jokes and such, he is most popular. :) --Suffery (talk) 21:57, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

- Is this in the article somewhere or are you proposing including it? Samwalton9 (talk) 16:44, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- It's not in this article, but I also think it should be included, as it has gone as far as it has now become an internet meme. Gabe Newell has never publicly commented on his weight, and I assume that no reliable sources say what his weight is. However mocking Gabe for his weight is very common online and it's widely believed that every time someone makes a fat joke about Gabe, it delays the release of Half Life 3. --PWNGWN (talk) 14:02, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- There are no grounds for including this information in the article if no reliable sources cover it and after a brief search it would appear they don't. Samwalton9 (talk) 14:15, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism?
why is this article "semi protected indefinitely due to an ongoing high risk of vandalism"? why is Newell so unpopular?? Jgcxelite (talk) 12:35, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't know the exact reasons, but I do know that, especially around Facepunch Forums, there are constant cracks at Mr. Newell's weight and his apparent habit of constantly pushing releases father and farther back. It's even gone so far as to connect the two together, stating that any joke about Newell would lead to the delay of an upcoming game. That's probably why the article is protected, to prevent such jokes from appearing. 216.236.163.39 (talk) 16:31, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Even though the page is protected, someone was still able to get onto it and throw some jokes onto it today (August 16, 2009) —Preceding unsigned comment added by BfDelano (talk • contribs) 20:17, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- How dare they? Gabe Newell has meant a lot for the developement of games. Even thought I don't like certain things in their games, I enjoy them as a whole. I does not like certain things about steam either, but if we are about to judge something, we must remember to sum up everything.
- Also remember that the only one that truely can judge a person is him/her-self!
--He hates PS3? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.164.230.139 (talk) 09:09, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Not because he hates the PS3, but because he's gone to lengths to insult the PS3's entire fan base with vicious and entirely unnecessary remarks to the media. The Playstation isn't his only target either. The guy is pretty rude toward anyone and anything outside of his sphere. He just foams at the mouth more than usual concerning the PS3. So it shouldn't be surprising at all if a lot of people he's been offensive to feel inclined to be offensive right back at him. 67.164.111.181 (talk) 22:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Gaben Phenomenon?
Gabe Newell has become an extremely popular man, an icon of the PC gaming industry. Along with this status there has been a proliferation of content related to this (especially using the alternative "Gaben", which is based on his email, GabeN@valve). The use of this alternate name is so ubiquitous that it actually seems to pop up in a news/blog article by accident (http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/142896-valve-confirms-steam-box-coming-in-2013-says-it-will-compete-with-next-gen-consoles).
A few examples of extremely popular video/audio content related to this phenomenon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdeY1v6jC7Q http://www.gabenewell.org/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tsHkpesBdY
One can see the influence of this phenomenon almost everywhere in the PC gaming community. I feel it is relevant to this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.89.74 (talk • contribs) 23:09, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Software Engineer or Manager?

The official directory on Valve's site suggests he held management, or at least "project management", type positions. -- ferret (talk)
Capitalization request
The N in GabeN should be capitalized, as GabeN means GabeNewell.
- Actually "Gaben" comes from his email address, gaben@valvesoftware.com, and due to the internet, the pronounciation was edged to "Gaben" instead of "Gabe N.". This is also what Gabe himself and some colleagues use in some tweets as well. Thus, I think it is kind of "official" to say Gaben, but GabeN is just what the other half of Reddit tries to make it. Gabe Logan Newell (/ˈnjuːəl/; born November 3, 1962), often nicknamed Gaben, is …
. But that’s just how I would implement this request. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 16:28, 24 November 2016 (UTC)
Cult of personality
Maybe there should be a bit about the cult of personality surrounding him in the gamer community. Benjamin (talk) 07:46, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Nickname discussion
Hi, let's stop edit war and discuss first.
I think his nickname should be GabeN because:
- I always think it is supposed to be Gabe + N from his last name, since the origin of this nickname is his email address, which sometimes people use this format. I have no solid source, though.
- His email is not really a proof of which spelling is more correct. E-mail address is case-insensitive, so people write their email in all lower case all the time, despite whatever spelling they prefer. If anything, he doesn't write his email as "Gaben@valvesoftware.com" either.
-fireattack (talk) 17:45, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- But GabeN isn't as common as Gaben, so shouldn't WP:COMMONNAME apply? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 20:07, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Remember COMMONNAME applies to article titles, not content really. TMRULES might apply, but this is not a trademark. -- ferret (talk) 20:45, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, but we still should prefer the use of the more common stylization. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:18, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- What do WP:RS use? @Dissident93: what is the basis for your "GabeN isn't as common as Gaben" claim? DMacks (talk) 21:13, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Per the link Lordtobi posted in the edit summary: https://cse.google.com/cse/home?cx=003516479746865699832:leawcwkqifq&q=%22Gaben%22 Many of the sources here simply use "Gaben". ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:16, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
Honestly most of the people I know call him Lord Gaben. Loafin (talk) 22:07, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- I can agree with this statement, however, me and my friends is not a reliable source. With how Wikipedia works, you could be GabeN and still need to cite a source for any major content you add. — IVORK Discuss 22:21, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

- Not done The page already displays 55 due to it using a template calculating this automatically. If it still shows 54 for you, you might need to referesh your cache; most browser allow this by pressing Ctrl+Shift+R on the given page. Lordtobi (✉) 19:27, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Grammar Mistake
I can't edit this article but there's a grammar mistake in the Personal life section. Third sentence. "The couple have two sons..." should be "The couple has two sons..."
I think the sentence "The couple has two sons, including Gray Newell" reads a lot better but that's just my opinion.
- Isn't "have" used for plural examples in the present tense? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:34, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Gabe Newell undergraduate houses at Harvard University
Gabe Newell confirmed in an email from his publicly published address that he lived in Thayer and Winthrop houses while attending Harvard University, as confirmed here https://i.imgur.com/ctUfSBC.jpg
Gzideck (talk) 03:42, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Newell's emails have been faked before, which is why shouldn't consider Imgur a reliable source. Lordtobi (✉) 04:27, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Even if this was true, would it really matter where he lived on campus anyway? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 04:47, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm the one who received the email, didn't know what the best way of providing solid evidence was. The house you live in at Harvard is a big deal, demonstrated by them all having their own Wikipedia pages, such as Winthrop House. Additionally, if you go down the List of Harvard University people page, you'll find that many of them display their resident houses during their time at the college. Gzideck (talk) 13:14, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- We cannot verify who received this email, even if it was you. This is simply why Wikipedia does not accept this mouth-to-mouth information and instead relies on reliable secondary sources. If this is relevant, someone will have reported on it (e.g. a Harvard-centric mag could have this). Lordtobi (✉) 13:28, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough, but the info can't really be verified like Lordtobi said. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 05:36, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Dead link (reference #22)
Hello!
I'm very, very new to Wikipedia so please forgive me for any errors. Regarding the page, The Seattle Times changed their archival prefix from old. to archive., and the old. one doesn't work anymore, so is it possible for anyone to update the link on reference 22 from http://old.seattletimes.com/pacificnw/2003/0518/cover02.html, to https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=20030516&slug=plongbeach18?
Thank you!

Market share description.
"Steam controls half to 70%" and "more than half" is not the same thing. The first statement carries with it a high degree of uncertainty, where the second implies far less doubt. The citation supports the first statement, it does not support the second. I'm restoring the status quo and going back to "half to 70%", and allowing a consensus to form before editing further. cc:@Dissident93: Rklahn (talk) 13:15, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Rklahn: My changes were done due to the degree of uncertainty (a range of 20% goes beyond reasonable margin of error), but if you believe my edit also implied less doubt then fair enough. Would a simple "roughly half of the market" be an improvement over both? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 14:48, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with the idea that a 20% range is beyond reasonable. That's actually what I think needs to be preserved here. When "half to 70%" is said, the reader is able to question it, and because of verifiability the reader can find it, see it is the same in the source, and give the passage it's due weight. "more that half" gives the source more credence than it should have. There are probably other ways to say this, and maybe other sources that give better data, and we can talk about that. That being said, I think the original stands out as the best at this point. cc: @Dissident93 and IceWelder: Rklahn (talk) 17:07, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
