Revised lead.

[edit]

I propose that the lead be revised to the following:

Canadian GAA is the informal name by which the Canadian County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association is usually known.

It is one of over 30 regional executive boards throughout the world. While they are known as "county" boards, some are no longer co-extensive with the area of counties of Ireland and still others are outside Ireland altogether, nevertheless the term enjoys common usage. Canadian GAA has jurisdiction over the whole of Canada.

The Board's role is to promote and regulate Gaelic games as well as to bear responsibility for the Board's inter-county teams.

Another editor seems to think that this is either non NPOV or involves a name change. I contend that it neither of these things. It clarifies an ambiguous name. If an ordinary Canadian happened across this article, he might be shocked to discover that Canada is a mere county, not the larger part of a continent in the eyes of the GAA. The proposed lead provides context for this surprising news. Laurel Lodged (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest

The Canadian GAA is responsible for Gaelic games all across Canada. It has the same status as one of the county boards of Ireland and is one of over thirty regional GAA executive boards throughout the world. The board is responsible for the Canadian Gaelic football, Hurling, Camogie and Ladies' Gaelic football teams.

Just an idea Laurel, more mutton for the stew. I cant see how either would be ambiguous.Murry1975 (talk) 19:48, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Murray. It's definite improvement on what's there already. I'll mull it over. Laurel Lodged (talk)

Hurling section seems like a copypaste

[edit]

It looks like the hurling section is written like a promotional article, rather than a wiki article, and is possibly just copied from another source. I think it should be rewritten or removed. TimeEngineer (talk) 17:01, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

I propose that we merge Toronto GAA and Western Canada GAA Divisional Board into Canadian GAA. None of them are very expansive or high quality, and bringing them together will allow all the information to be in one place. Also, right now none of them have any references! @Laurel Lodged, BrownHairedGirl, Canadagaa, Gnevin, and Bellerophon5685: thoughts? TimeEngineer (talk) 17:14, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@TimeEngineer, I think the fundamental problem here is the complete lack of references. Merging unreferenced content into another article seems to me be a very bad idea.
I suggest a post at WT:GAA asking for help on getting at least Canadian GAA into shape, and preferably the other two. If we at least had Canadian GAA as a referenced article, then I'd support simply redirecting the other two to Canadian GAA, with {{R with possibilities}}. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:24, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl I agree with you that the complete lack of references is an issue, so simply merging the information would be a less than great call. But the Canadian GAA page is formatted so poorly and has so little information (which looks like it might be due to the WP:WikiProject Gaelic games/GAA county template being used) that I think bringing everything together might be needed. Like a semi fresh start. TimeEngineer (talk) 17:29, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TimeEngineer, a fresh start is a good idea. But collating unreferenced content is not a fresh start; it's just rearranging the junk. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:10, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl I see your point. Honestly I tried doing research to improve it, but there are no sources! I think it might fail WP:GNG, and be a candidate for deletion. I don't want to make that call, though. I tried to just add a table of teams and divisions, but there's just so little media coverage its hard to find any information thats not just on the CGAA's website.

What do you think? What should be the next step? TimeEngineer (talk) 20:50, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks TimeEngineer for the ping on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gaelic games. In all honesty, I broadly concur with the assessment. That a merge is almost certainly appropriate. As it seems unlikely that the Toronto Division Board and Western Canada Divisional Board articles can stand on their own. For several different WP:MERGEREASONs. I am happy to pare them back to what can be supported. And merge/redirect that to a short "divisions" section on Canadian GAA. After that (or perhaps even in parallel) a significant chunk of the rest of the body (of Canadian GAA) should be pared back to what the sources can support. In terms of those sources, there seems to be a book titled "The History of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Canada" (O'Flynn; 2008). And there may be some coverage available of the so-called Skydome Games (in March 1990 and 1991). Otherwise, much of the rest needs a significant review. If there's anything that you want to take a pass at yourself, let me know. Otherwise I'm happy to start with a case-by-case and line-by-line review of the two "divisional board" articles. In advance of a (probable) merge/redirect. And we can see from there. Guliolopez (talk) 17:50, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link @Guliolopez:! The entire History section is WP:COPYPASTEd from that book! And the hurling section is copied from here [3]. This is almost beyond repair. TimeEngineer (talk) 19:18, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Thanks TimeEngineer. If no other opinions are offered in the coming days (for example to explain why or how these things meet SIGCOV or other notability criteria for standalone articles), I am going to go ahead with the summarisation of the two "component" articles. Toronto GAA and Western Canada GAA. And will merge the content. Here. To this Canadian GAA article. And undertake a cleanup of this target article. As well as some of the stray/messy "navboxes" that seem to be lingering on some of the "member" articles (which, in a lot of cases, aren't actually "navboxes". In the "navigational" sense). Guliolopez (talk) 19:31, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Guliolopez:. I think there is as much consensus as we can have that there should only be 1 article, as well sourced as it can be, about Gaelic Games in Canada. Here is a list of all the related pages that I think should be merged and redirected:
If any of these get enough independent references in media, they can be recreated in the future, but right now there should be only one page. TimeEngineer (talk) 16:32, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think we need to go one step at a time here TimeEngineer. I agree that there is emerging consensus for the Toronto GAA and Western Canada GAA Divisional Board articles to be merged into Canadian GAA. I personally haven't evaluated all the others. And so I wouldn't be arriving at any conclusions on those other ones. As yet. I will go ahead with the merge of the first two. For now. And then we can take a look at the rest. But I'm not sure it's an accurate reflection of the discussion to decide/declare that there is consensus in respect of the others.... Guliolopez (talk) 09:42, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I guess I jumped the gun a bit there. TimeEngineer (talk) 14:21, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TimeEngineer. RE:
  • Toronto GAA/Western Division merges - I have completed these 2x merge/redirects. I think the project (and the target) much improved as a result.
  • Other merges - I personally don't advocate or support the proposed merges. Absolutely some of those articles need improvement. But I don't see the case for merging.
  • Clubs - I have merged the content from the Western Division article to a "clubs" section. But I think this could easily be removed. And replaced with your table. As you'd proposed/included on this talk page. Above. I will leave that to you.
  • "Hidden" content - I will take a look over the coming weeks. To see whether and how much of that can be salvaged. But, otherwise, I'm not sure that much of it has a place.
Cheers. Guliolopez (talk) 15:52, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

- I have removed the merge suggestions for the other 3 pages, and have added the table of teams. Thank you all for your contributions. At the end of this process, we have a much better article with proper references, and a strong foundation to build on in the future. Thank you all for your support on this. TimeEngineer (talk) 19:54, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Happy to help. I agree. This article/structure is in a much better place now. Guliolopez (talk) 12:48, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
