Definition of a geometric network?

[edit]

I feel that the page is lacking a concise, exact, definition. You can pretty much understand from the name what it is about, but I came here looking for a formal definition, and came out none the wiser. Maybe someone with some insight could add this? It says that GN are "similar" to graphs, but not in what way they differ. The way I have understood it before is that it actually is a graph, only applied in a certain way, mainly to represent some geographical information. If this is so, then I think it should say so.

The "Composition of a Geometric Network" part seems to perhaps give a definition defining first edges and then what edges are connected (and connected edges give rise to nodes.) This is sort of the other way around from mathematical graphs and as such seems a little counter-intuitive to me, though perfectly viable ofc, so if this is indeed the definition it would be nice if it was more explicit and very clear about being the definition.

It also mentions that edges are connected "at points," perhaps implying that edges are actually line segments or curves in Euclidean space? If there is some kind of restriction as to what objects edges can be (as opposed to graphs, where vertices can be any set) this should really be pointed out, IMHO. Maybe I'm coming at all of this from a too mathematical viewpoint? MacLaurin (talk) 12:25, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
