Position[edit]

"The site where U-166 lies, at 28°37′N 90°45′W / 28.617, -90.75, at a depth of around 5,000 feet (1,500 m)." This position is only 9 fathoms of water. A Google Earth Community post has it at 28.5N 89.0W, but that's only 350 fathoms. There is a wreck on the nav chart about a mile away though which is consitent with the Robert E. Lee. I'm just guessing now that the position in the article is the position of the attack on U-171. Orniphobe (talk) 03:05, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. 1, 3, and 5 have bad links. Does anyone have better ones? Orniphobe (talk) 01:58, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Position, part II[edit]

"Robert E. Lee was under escort from the United States Navy patrol craft PC-566 approximately 45 miles (72 km) south of the Mississippi River Delta when she was torpedoed by U-166." Yet 'uboat.net' has Robert E. Lee as 'about 25 miles southeast of the entrance to the Mississippi River.'
I know that the Mississippi is large, but is it big enough to allow a 20 mile difference in locations?

The Mississippi River Delta refers to a greater area around the mouth of the Mississippi river, and is considerably wider than the river itself, gradually transitioning to the Gulf of Mexico. It has no precise coordinate and is much larger than the actual river mouth, which would seem to be enough to account for the 20 mile discrepancy. Syd (talk) 23:21, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Number of crew[edit]

The article says:

Complement:	4 officers, 44 enlisted

But it also says, in the article text (twice), that U-166 had a crew of 52. So, which is it? 48 or 52? NCdave (talk) 00:35, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The sinking of the U 166[edit]

As the U 166 was attacked on July 30, 1942, and reported missing on July 30, 1942 according to the Wikipedia article , how can it be that the U 166 was attacked by a plane on August 1, 1942. 89.200.14.3 (talk) 10:52, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
