Grunewald

[edit]

Why doesn't this Grunewald have an umlaut like all the other Grünewalds? Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 10:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's for the same reason that it has been determined that the pronounciation of Worcester is Wouster. Some people, though, have tried to 'rectify' the name of that locality/suburb where I lived for a few months when I was a toddler. Later, we often went to the lake in the Grunewald for a summer Sunday outing. The people who 'rectify' this are in publishing houses and seem to assume it's wrong what their authors supplied, or maybe the authors got it wrong.
When very clearly Grunewald is meant, I have seen Grünwald. I have seen it in Peter Ustinov's memoirs, in Isherwood, Le Carré. and in the bio of Olga Chechova. Grunewald is the name of a forest and a suburb, or in modern English precinct. It used to be one of the most expensive ones, so very upmarket. 2001:8003:A070:7F00:F52F:B40C:7D3D:7B7 (talk) 23:48, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Because its a name that came from a German dialect long before Hochdeutsch

Grünewald

[edit]

"Grünewald with umlaut is German for Green Woods or Green Forest" That is incorrect. While Germans would understand it proper German is grüner Wald. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.185.219.182 (talk) 12:46, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Move to Grunewald (locality)

[edit]

This section should be renamed/moved to Grunewald (locality), as the forest of the same name is equally as well known and has similar daily page views on Wikipedia. "Grunewald" should lead to the disambiguation page instead of directly to the locality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alaska2044 (talkcontribs) 17:04, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
