Episode descriptions
[edit]Put the descriptions back. They're important for cowards. 76.14.152.222 (talk) 04:08, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Good grief - these descriptions are the children of walk-throughs and spoilers! Dial ‘em back 112.141.164.140 (talk) 11:03, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
Use of credits as the source for the episode list "Written by"
[edit]Currently, the episode list uses the wording of the episodes' opening credits for the "Written by" field. There are some issues with using this (aside from it being a primary source):
- Episode 4 ("The Outside") is based on a webcomic by Emily Carroll, not a short story; reliable secondary sources back this up[1][2][3]
- Episodes 1 & 8 ("Lot 36" and "The Murmuring") are original stories for the series; the Del Toro stories that the teleplays are based on haven't been published separately
I made an edit to change Ep 4 to say "based on a webcomic" instead of "based on a short story", but this was reverted by @AngryCyclist (by the looks of it, you've also reverted at least one similar IP edit?), so I thought it would be best to discuss here per WP:BRD.
I can see that it might seem straightforward to use the opening credits here (maybe viewing this as the "official" origin of these stories?), but when reliable independent sources show that it's a simplification, it's misleading to readers to keep these exactly as they are.
As a compromise, if you really want to keep the wording of the opening credits in the episode list, I'd suggest that we add footnotes to explain the details of these, with citations to back them up. These footnotes could be something like:
- "The Outside" is based on Emily Carroll's webcomic "Some Other Animal's Meat".[1][2]
- "Lot 36" and "The Murmuring" are based on original stories by Del Toro for this series,[4][5] which have not been published as of October 2022[update].[6]

- Without any objections (and an intervening edit by another editor adding "Some Other Animal's Meat"), I've made the changes in the article and kept "webcomic" in "Written by". If it's worth mentioning in the article that the opening credits call it a short story, then this should probably be done in the footnote. Would be good to get a consensus on whether it's best to keep "Some Other Animal's Meat" in "Written by", rather than just the footnote. ‑‑YodinT 21:15, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- We always go by according to the on-screen credits of episodes of TV series as this is primary source. — YoungForever(talk) 22:29, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @YoungForever. I completely get using on screen credits in 99% of situations, and where they're the only source, but is there a policy for situations like this where reliable independent sources show that the on screen credits aren't fully accurate? ‑‑YodinT 10:34, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- It was my edit that added the link to the Emily Carroll webcomic. I am for adding the original story's title in the "written by". The other episodes keep the same name as the source material, so just saying "the story" make senses for them. It's a shame that actual title of the comic is left as a footnote. salty-horse (talk) 14:30, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
