First African American Governor

[edit]

This article states that "Lieutenant Governor P.B.S. Pinchback assumed office during Warmoth's absence, becoming the first African-American governor in the history of the United States," but doesn't Pinchback's predecessor as Lieutenant Governor, Oscar Dunn, deserve that distinction? According to Dunn's article, he served as acting governor for a total of 39 days when Governor Warmoth left the state to recooperate from a foot injury. Is this a distinction between "acting governor" and "official governor"? Why would Pinchback's stint take precedence when he assumed the office without being elected either? Could someone with knowledge on the matter please clarify this discrepancy in this article and perhaps the related articles dealing with "African American governors," "minority governors," as well as the articles of "Oscar Dunn" and "P. B. S. Pinchback"? Thank you. 66.91.36.8 (talk) 03:55, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
