General Henry English Read

[edit]

This is my ggggg uncle who fought in the Mexican War at the young age of 14 years old. He was left to die. Suffered multiple wounds and was in the hospital for months. He walked back to Kentucky the entire way. He served as a spy. Upon his return the governor of KY handed him a special sword with his name on it and an award. It is now in the Fison Museum in Louisville, KY.

When the Civil War Broke out, he again was called to duty. First as Lieutenant and then General. He as a boy was a blacksmith, a mechanic, and before and after the civil war became a Lawyer. He served in the First and Second Confederate Congress. He was pardoned by Lincoln for not fighting for the North. He ended up committing suicide in Louisville, KY in his law office. His note simply said he had served honorably for years for his great state of Kentucky but could go on no more. He left a wife and several small children behind.

He has a monument in Elizabethtown, KY — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.49.158.155 (talk) 05:07, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
