Chivi's position on the manna

[edit]

While this is drawn from JewishEncyclopedia, the statement the scholars there made, repeated here, that "Ḥiwi further inquired why manna from heaven no longer descends in the desert of Sinai as it is said to have done in olden times (Ibn Ezra to Ex. xvi. 13)" is incorrect. If one looks at the actual words of Ibn Ezra there, one discovers that Ḥiwi was attempting to explain the manna as a natural phenomenon, something known as 'tarnagvin' in Persian. The question why manna from heaven no longer descends is part of Ibn Ezra's attempt to rebut Ḥiwi. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshwaxman (talkcontribs) 10:55, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
