Famous Hungarian Americans

[edit]

Bought a book on the subject, soon as it comes I'm going to totally re-vamp this section and make it featured-article-worthy. For right now, let's leave out people who just "happen to have Hungarian ancestry" or people who "were born in a territory that once was Hungary but are actually Austrians." The first sentence states what this article is about. It is not about ethnic Hungarians. It is about people (or their descendents) who came from the country of Hungary. The fact the geographic scope of Hungary has changed over time is of no consequence whatsoever. If they came from a place that was part of Hungary at the time, then they are are of Hungarian descent. This is the same for all fooian American articles, reflects the terminology used in the US, and is not to be changed by a single editor who wants to impose his agenda on this article or any other article. Hmains (talk) 04:38, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

However, this article isn't People of Hungarian descent. It's Hungarian Americans. We've been through this many times over the years. Just because you seem to be one of the few (possibly only) editor who doesn't know that's the way to source X-American lists, isn't really my problem. Bulldog123 11:51, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This article is about Americans and their desscendents who came from the country of Hungary. As you state, you are trying to change this article into one involving just ethnic Hungarians. You have not discussed this change here on the talk page and have not obtained consensus from anyone for such radical changes. Hmains (talk) 18:45, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm not. I'm trying to change (if you can call it that - considering it shouldn't have been the other way around at all per WP:OR) this article to include only people who have been referred to by professional sources as "Hungarian American." It just so happens... in most case... they are ethnic Hungarians. Though that's not always true as Edward Teller, an ethnic Jew, is still referred to as Hungarian American... most likely because he grew up in a Magyarized family... therefore he remains. • What you do is change: writing was one way; you are reversing it. The long standing writing of an article is arrived at by consensus of the WP editors. WP is about consensus. The result of that consensus is what is in any given article at any given time. When editors want to change something, they must gather consensus to do so. Otherwise, they have no right to change anything and in particular to re-purpose an article just because they do not like the current (and long-standing) consensus. You edits are trying to re-purpose the article as you have stated above and change the inclusion criteria to match what you want to now assert. I suggested alternatives on your talk page regarding ethnic articles. I see you have not pursued them. Do you want to contribute your ideas to WP or do you just want to fight, which is to no one's benefit? Hmains (talk) 19:37, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll put it in the easiest terms possible: I don't need anyone's "consensus" to remove a smurf from a List of Hungarians. If, however, you find a source calling that smurf "Hungarian" ...there's nothing I can do but allow you to re-add that smurf. Then you can call me a vandal. Let's say that smurf is Joseph M. Gaydos. I removed him (perfectly in my right if he's unsourced or sourced improperly). Now it's your job to prove that I was wrong to remove him: [1]. If I am wrong, then you can call me a vandal. Unfortunately, it seems I wasn't wrong. Clear enough? Bulldog123 08:50, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
