Notability?
[edit]I looked this up because I'm bored and I'm taking this train later today, from Champaign to Chicago. However, it provides little useful information, and who outside of Illinois will have heard of or care about this train? I understand train stations and rail companies, but individual trains or small routes? Are we going to have a Wikiproject about all of the individual buses that operate in the United States? What is the point of this? Just a question. Tractorkingsfan 13:34, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- I had heard of the train even before I moved away from Los Angeles. Yes, the train is notable. Slambo (Speak) 14:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Merge?
[edit]Should this be merged with Saluki (Amtrak)? They are the same route. --Elliskev 15:02, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Modified merge suggestion
[edit]I have change my suggestion from merge with Saluki (Amtrak) to merge into Illinois Service. See comments/discussion at Talk:Carl Sandburg (Amtrak). In a nutshell, the six routes that make up the Illinois Service are really just components of that service. I think a nice article could be made from the collection of start class articles. --Elliskev 14:05, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Journey time and Frequency?
[edit]As someone who just stumbled on this article. Can I ask some questions?
- You give a route length (499 Km), but no journey time. How long does it take end-to-end?
- How often does it run (once per day, ever hour, or what)?
- Is there any difference between the Illini and Saluki?
A map of the route would be useful. TiffaF 12:48, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Proposed merge
[edit]I propose that this article and Saluki be merged into a new joint article, Illini and Saluki. I've prepared a draft at User:Mackensen/Illini and Saluki. In the event of a merger I think this article should just be moved to preserve the edit history, and then edited. The Saluki inevitably duplicates this article and I no longer think that it makes sense to keep them separate. Mackensen (talk) 13:29, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- It's a good looking merge, but I have to say there are some distinctions in the histories of each train. There's also the issue of that former terminus to Decatur, for the Illini that the Saluki never had. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 23:37, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, but the Saluki has essentially no history of its own. It's just another frequency, albeit with a different name. Mackensen (talk) 11:07, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Both trains are named for two different colleges, aren't they (One for UI, and the other for SIU)? Listen, it's not that I'm not open to the idea of a merge, it's just that it seems like there are aspects of one that distinguishes it from the other. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 13:24, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- There are aspects, yes, but I think they're outweighed by the similarities. 98% of the content in the Saluki article duplicates the content in Illini. Same termini. Same stops. Same distance. Same running time. Same rolling stock. Amtrak reports their revenue and ridership as a single unit. Do the differences justify a standalone article? Mackensen (talk) 20:45, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Well, the differences should be acknowledged, and clearly they are. I'm perfectly willing to go along with a merger if nobody else has any other objections. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 22:30, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

- Merge: this is perhaps the most obvious merge I've ever seen. The Saluki is nothing more than a second frequency of the existing Illini with a different name. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:12, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Map in infobox
[edit]I'm not sure I agree with using a map as the infobox image. The infobox already houses an RDT, and the KML map is displayed atop the page. I would rather to have a quality illustrative image of the train in the infobox, instead of a third map. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:10, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
- I don't necessarily disagree, but it does get around the awkwardness of the map in the Route section. Also the KML is merely a link, and the RDT displays different information and is collapsed by default. Mackensen (talk) 09:36, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
- What's wrong with a map in the route section? That seems pretty useful to me. I would support having the route section be first rather than the history, which would still place the map near the top. (And I think File:Amtrak Illini at Carbondale 2.jpg, while smallish, is perfectly adequate for an infobox image. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:53, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
