Same as Azawagh?

[edit]

Is this basin synonymous with the Azawagh? This source [1] (p. 228) suggests that it is, and the maps certainly look similar. Khazar2 (talk) 19:06, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not in my view, although they occupy much the same area. A sedimentary basin is a geological formation where the land subsided, filling with sediment, over a long period of time. It may have risen since then, or may have been overlaid by volcanic material, so a sedimentary basin is not necessarily concave. The Iullemmeden Basin was formed between 250 and 50 million years ago. The Azawagh is a river valley that dried up a few thousand years ago when the Sahara climate changed. River valleys flicker in and out of existence in geological time scales. I think they should have separate articles, one for the geological structure and one for the geographical one. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:43, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense, and thanks for the swift response. I'll probably just add a "see also" here or a sentence explaining the relationship. Khazar2 (talk) 20:03, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
