Surname spelling

[edit]

It is true that the last major spelling reform of the Portuguese language also provided new "official" spellings of surnames like "Mello" and "Souza". However, the change was not mandatory in Brazil, and many Brazilians opted to retain the original spelling in their legal surname, including in the birth certificates of their children. In Brazil, changing one's legal surname (even a simple spelling correction) after birth registration is a complicated business, so it is unlikely that Júlio César went to that trouble. He may have changed the spelling of his *pen* name, and/or the editors of his books may have done so in later books; but most websites devoted to him still retain the original spelling (19.000 Google hits agains 500). Surely his *father* João de Deus did not change the spelling, so the original spelling is more appropriate in his case. --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 19:18, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
