So was James Ferman British or American? I must admit I only knew him as the "public face" of British film censorship - I know nothing of his pre-BBFC career. AdorableRuffian 23:00, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He was in fact a New Yorker as his obituary makes clear. --Mr impossible 13:25, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

'The Golden Age of Censorship'

[edit]

Paul Hoffman's recent novel 'The Golden Age of Censorship' appears to be a roman-a-clef based on the life and times of Ferman. Hoffman used to work for Ferman at the BBFC. Colin4C 18:10, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A Clockwork Orange

[edit]

Was he ever seriously accused of banning this film in the UK? Ali G asked him about it in his interview, but the facetious spoof nature of this show should be borne in mind (remember that Ali calls it "A Cholocate Orange")--MartinUK (talk) 00:17, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We had to suffer three puritanical thought policemen here in the UK during the 70's and 80's: Mary Whitehouse, Margaret Thatcher and James Ferman...Nobody seems to remember now how much was censored through the efforts of this infernal trio of killjoys...Thank heavens for whoever it was who invented the internet...Colin4C (talk) 08:50, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I remember, in one appearance on TV, he told how he was approached (?) and congratulated for banning Clockwork Orange. He made the point that he didn't ban it and didn't have the power to do so. It was withdrawn by the director. This wasn't Ali G. Unfortunately, I don't remember what show it was on. Dannman (talk) 15:01, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
