Beale

[edit]

Gillogly strings do not 'debunk' Beale. They raise questions about the nature of the Ciphers. That's it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.142.15.116 (talk) 18:26, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Best cryptanalyst

[edit]

We say:

"On the PBS website, they report that he has been called "arguably the best non-government cryptanalyst in the U.S."

However, on the PBS website the quote is not attributed. Moreover -- and with all respect to Gillogly -- the assertion is almost certainly false, given all the very smart folk involved in academic crypto research in the US. It's a little like comparing apples to oranges, too, as (AFAIK) Gillogly does work on solving classical/machine crypto, as opposed to modern cryptography. — Matt Crypto 14:42, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I do think it's appropriate though that a mention be made of just how well-known he is. How about the wording, "He is currently considered to be one of the best non-government cryptanalysts in the United States"? That way we have "one of the" instead of "the", and we can still link to the PBS site as reference. Elonka 15:20, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The PBS Nova article is more specific than this: '..."arguably the best non-government cryptanalyst in the U.S." in the field of classical (historical) cryptosystems.' This may well still be false, but it addresses and doesn't conflict with your point. User:Scryer 11 Sep 2006

Many of the links to older articles are dead (Cryptologia, The Daily Telegraph). Are there long-term-archived copies anywhere that could be linked to instead? (Anders Hallström) 85.230.255.48 (talk) 13:57, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
