I have removed the entire Career section added by EMIClassics. It is a blatant copyright violation from http://www.intermusica.co.uk/biss. Do not re-add it! I have also re-added the stub tag and the {{primarysources}} tag. Do not remove these tags until these issues have been fully addressed. Voceditenore (talk) 10:38, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

are not the NYTimes and BBC references sufficient to take down the 3rd party source tag? Pohick2 (talk) 17:05, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

tradition extending to Beethoven

[edit]

Much though I love Biss, Fleisher, and Schnabel - Beethoven playing doesn't get better than by these three pianists , to my ears! - the idea that Mr. Biss and his great teacher Leon Fleisher are the bearers of a performance tradition extending back to Beethoven is, unfortunately, demonstrably rubbish -as I'm certain Mr. Biss and Mr. Fleisher would fully agree. One need only compare the Beethoven recordings of Theodor Leschetizky's pupils Ignaz Friedman, Jan Ignaz Paderewski, et al, to those of Artur Schnabel (the putative bearer of the tradition)- they could hardly be more different - to recognize that Schnabel did not learn how to interpret Beethoven from his teacher (as Schnabel himself said, too, in case there's any doubt). Moreover, immediately after Beethoven's death, Czerny and Anton Schindler differed radically over just what Beethoven's style of playing was, and both claimed to have it from the horse's mouth. In any case, Schnabel was an extraordinarily original and individual player and certainly does not sound like what Czerny describes in his editions. So - i'm gonna remove that passage - Mr. Biss's Beethoven playing is so great that it doesn't need boosting by any ahistorical claim of "authenticity."
