Juan/Joan[edit]

The mother tongue of Prim was Catalan, as evrybody until the big immigration move from the rest of Spain in the yers 50-60-70 in the XX century. So, the name should to be Joan.

I agree that the proper name for the article is Joan Prim, and is the one most modern bibliography uses. I will move if no one opposes.--RR (talk) 15:40, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What a load of bullshit. Prim never said or wrote that his name was Joan and not Juan in his life - at least not while he was an adult and a public figure. This is not surprising since Catalan nationalism did not really take off until the 1880s, after his death. He acted and considered himeslf during his entire career as a Spanish military and political figure. And what is this crap about everybody speaking Catalan until "the big immigration move from the rest of Spain in the yers 50-60-70" - Barcelona was already predominatly Castilian speaking in the 17th century. Catalan did not become again a language of prestige until well late into the 19th century, and an administrative one only in the 20th. Wikipedia should be ashamed of assisting modern catalanists in their quest to distort History in their favor.--150.244.28.16 (talk) 08:08, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pkease, don't resort to insult. It's not needed. Prim was called Juan (Spanish) when he was in Spain, and Joan (Catalan) when he was in Catalonia. It was standard practice in that time. There are valid reasons for naming the article both ways. I propose Joan Prim, since modern bibliography tends to prefer it that way. A google search also favors Joan over Juan.

WPMILHIST Assessment[edit]

A good start; could probably benefit from some headings - something as simple as separating the introduction from the biography would do wonders, I think, for the overall appearance of the article. LordAmeth 20:01, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Juan Prim, 1st Count of ReusJuan Prim – As one of the exceptions under WP:OBE: Peers who are almost exclusively known by their personal names. "Juan Prim" is referred in sources under his personal name, most specially for referring to him in the period when he became prime minister, which is when he became most notable. The current title is also against current naming conventions in that it does not show the most senior nobility title (which would be that of Marquess of los Castillejos) and he was not "best known" under the title of Count of Reus since when sources refer to these, they typically show both or also that of Viscount. • Support. In favour. In his time the most common name was probably General Prim (Spanish-language sources) or Marshal Prim (English-language sources), which it is apparently discouraged per WP:SINGLENAME, although Juan Prim, General Juan Prim, Marquis of Castillejos or Count of Reus are not unheard of. Other than Marshal Prim current usage in relevant secondary sources clearly leans towards Juan Prim, the most WP:CONCISE term, although Juan Prim y Prats, or Joan Prim (in English language sources this one is rather applied in connection to his equestrian statue, tho) are not unheard of. Overall, regarding Spanish prime ministers from the Sexenio and the Restauración, except Romanones (Count of Romanones, Count Romanones or Romanones), the Marquis of Alhucemas and (and that's already a bit of a stretch) the Marquis of Vega de Armijo current usage in English-language or Spanish-language secondary sources does not favour nobiliary titles that much. So there's that. All in all, regarding Spanish politicians who happened to enjoy a nobiliary title, applying the same standards than the plebs as default starting point (and then consider exceptions) is probably the best way forward. The circus of original research brought to this issue by some editors on the basis of the apparent need to determine preeminence between several titles (going against usage) or even determining obscure ordinal numbers (not always clear) is another reason to do so.--Asqueladd (talk) 17:43, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Serrano[edit]

Hi, fellow Wikipedians! I see Serrano is listed as "Monarch" during Prim's time as Prime Minister, although Serrano was only Regent. Should it be corrected to "Regent", "Head of State", or should I leave it as such? Darth2207Lucas (talk) 15:02, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed There is no infobox parameter for "Regent", so removed the "Monarch" parameter. Thanks for calling attention attention to this. Carlstak (talk) 22:34, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
