Kaplan College entry[edit]

Hello - Teammazur would like to submit a replacement for the current "Kaplan College" entry. Per conversations in 2007 about submitting our updates through the talk page, I've pasted our recommendation below. This entry is based entirely on fact and is up-to-date. Thank you.

About Kaplan College

About Kaplan College[edit]

Kaplan College campuses, part of Kaplan Higher Education, can be found in 22 markets across nine states. The campuses offer career-focused, proprietary education in a variety of program areas responsive to each of its local market needs.

Kaplan Higher Education serves 80,000 students through more than 70 campus-based schools across the United States and in Europe. It also has online programs through Kaplan Virtual Education, Kaplan University and Concord Law School of Kaplan University. Kaplan Higher Education schools offer a spectrum of academic opportunities, from high school diplomas to graduate and professional degrees, including a Juris Doctor degree. Kaplan Higher Education is part of Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company.

History[edit]

Kaplan College is a postsecondary institution providing career-focused education programs. In 2000, Kaplan, Inc. launched its higher education focus with the acquisition of Quest Education Corp. In 2004, the campus was renamed Kaplan University when it was granted approval to offer online master’s degree programs.

Denver, Hammond, Northwest Indianapolis, Merrillville, Renton and Milwaukee campuses acquired the Kaplan College name in 2006. The Kaplan College Phoenix, Hagerstown and Frederick campuses obtained the name in 2007. In May 2008, the Las Vegas campus changed its name to Kaplan College and a Cincinnati campus opened. In August 2008, eleven Maric College campuses throughout California were renamed Kaplan College. A new Kaplan College campus in Southeast Indianapolis opened in October 2008.

False Claims Act Lawsuit[edit]

A few IP editors have tried removing this section. The section is sourced, but I think this issue receives undue weight and ought to be trimmed down. P. D. Cook Talk to me! 19:21, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to propose two changes to this page. (FYI, I work for Kaplan, Inc.) The first edit is to reflect the change of the name of the company that owns Kaplan. The Washington Post Company has been renamed Graham Holdings Company. (See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/18/washington-post-renamed-change-name-graham-holdings_n_4295730.html) Second, each of the three False Claims suits (which were combined into one qui tam suit) have been dismissed as of July (see http://www.law360.com/articles/457625/kaplan-escapes-ex-employee-s-fca-suit). With that in mind, I would like to take out the False Claims Act section, since all allegations were dismissed. Thank you! MT wKaplan (talk) 19:33, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will make the False Claims Act edits today. Thanks! MT wKaplan (talk) 14:50, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV[edit]

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:15, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update Ownership After ECA Acquisition[edit]

Hello, I'd like to propose changes based on Kaplan College's recent acquisition by Education Corporation of America (ECA). The press release relating to the acquisition is cited below. I currently work for ECA and was formerly (before the acquisition) an employee of Kaplan.

I have noticed some other inaccuracies in the article related to the history of Kaplan College (some of the history relates to Kaplan University only), which I will submit as a separate request.

LEAD/INTRO

Replace "is a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc. and Kaplan Higher Education.[1]" with "is owned and operated by Education Corporation of America."

ADD NEW SECTION HEADER

After the lead/intro, suggest adding the ==History== header.

At the end of this section (before the references), suggest adding "Before being acquired by Education Corporation of America (ECA) in September 2015,[1] Kaplan College was part of Kaplan Higher Education, a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc."

Thank you!

Sousmi (talk) 15:30, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The proposed changes seem sensible enough so I hereby approve them. In addition to the citation from PR Newswire, please append the following reference:[2]. It is preferable not to rely upon press releases when more neutral sources are available. You may go ahead and update the article with the edits proposed above. Proposed Updates for Accuracy[edit]

For the sake of transparency, I am currently an employee of Education Corporation of America, which recently purchased Kaplan College. Previously (prior to the acquisition), I was employed by Kaplan Higher Education to work on content for Kaplan College. Kaplan University and Kaplan College were both part of Kaplan Higher Education, but until 2014, they operated as separate divisions. Much of the current content in this article refers to Kaplan University rather than Kaplan College. An explanation of edits appears below, followed by a proposed revised version of the page.

If there are any questions about the proposed edits or information below, please feel free to request clarification!

REDIRECT QUEST COLLEGE The redirect should be removed from this page. Quest College should redirect to Quest Education Corporation. As relates to Kaplan, Quest College was not an actual name (only Quest Education Corporation was). Quest did briefly become Kaplan College in 2000, but became Kaplan Higher Education in 2002 (both Kaplan College and Kaplan University fell under the Kaplan Higher Education umbrella). I think it's more accurate to redirect to the Quest Education Corporation page.

INFO BOX I removed all references to Kaplan or Graham Holdings Company and replaced with information for Education Corporation of America, which now owns Kaplan College. I've updated the campus locations to reflect only open Kaplan College locations (the other states listed were for Kaplan University or have since closed; see https://www.kaplancollege.com/locations/). The Kaplan College website is www.kaplancollege.com, not kaplancollege.edu (kaplancollege.edu is a redirect to www.kaplancollege.com), so this was also corrected.

REMOVAL OF AIC, HAMILTON, Kaplan College IN MD American Institute of Commerce, Education Medical Inc., Quest, Hamilton College, and "Kaplan College in Maryland" all refer to Kaplan University campuses and assets, not to any of the existing Kaplan College locations (see below for explanations and sources; see also http://www.kaplanuniversity.edu/locations.aspx).

American Institute of Commerce was renamed as Kaplan College in 2000, but was renamed as Kaplan University (Davenport campus) in 2004 (sources: http://degreecentral.com/blog/2010/11/18/your-inside-look-at-kaplan-university/, https://www.hlcommission.org/component/directory/?Itemid=93&Action=ShowBasic&instid=1586, http://wcfcourier.com/news/breaking_news/hamilton-college-and-kaplan-university-merge/article_64af1e6e-c35b-5932-bc92-1307a3673941.html, Kaplan University, http://newsroom.kaplan.edu/fact-sheet/kaplan-university-backgrounder/kaplan-university-backgrounder, and http://www.kaplanuniversity.edu/about/history.aspx).

Education Medical, Inc., became Quest Education Corporation in 1998 (see Quest Education Corporation for sources). In 2000, Quest became Kaplan College, but in 2004, the existing Kaplan Colleges at that time (in Iowa and Nebraska) became Kaplan University (see Quest Education Corporation for sources; see also http://www.kaplanuniversity.edu/about/history.aspx).

Hamilton College merged with Kaplan University, not Kaplan College, in 2007 (source: http://wcfcourier.com/news/breaking_news/hamilton-college-and-kaplan-university-merge/article_64af1e6e-c35b-5932-bc92-1307a3673941.html; see also Hamilton College (Iowa), Quest Education Corporation, and http://www.kaplanuniversity.edu/cedar-falls-iowa.aspx).

"Kaplan College in Maryland" refers to Kaplan University's Hagerstown and Frederick campuses. These campuses originated as Hagerstown Business College in 1938, became Kaplan College in 2007, and were renamed as Kaplan University in 2009 (see Kaplan University and http://www.kaplanuniversity.edu/hagerstown-maryland.aspx).

REMOVAL OF HESSER COLLEGE Hesser College has always been a separate college from Kaplan College, though it too was under the Kaplan Higher Education umbrella. Hesser College was renamed Mount Washington College in 2013 and is now closing (see Mount Washington College and http://www.mountwashington.edu/history.aspx).

GRAHAM HOLDINGS Removed this reference as it sounds as if Kaplan was a subsidiary of Graham Holdings in 2000. In 2000, Kaplan, Inc., was a subsidiary of The Washington Post Co. The Washington Post Co. was renamed Graham Holdings Co. in 2013 (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Holdings_Company#cite_note-5).

CEI College The reference to CEI is accurate for Kaplan College, but the reference to 64 campuses is for all of Kaplan Higher Education, not just Kaplan College. If reading the current source, "Kaplan owns 64 campuses" refers to Kaplan, Inc., (of which Kaplan Higher Education is a subsidiary) rather than just Kaplan College. (current wikipedia source: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A03E6DB163AF936A15757C0A9629C8B63). This statement should be edited to state "Kaplan Higher Education owned 64 campuses" for clarity (see http://www.kaplan.com/about-kaplan/newsroom?p_p_id=pressreleaseportlet_WAR_kaplancomportalportlet_INSTANCE_0Pp6&_pressreleaseportlet_WAR_kaplancomportalportlet_INSTANCE_0Pp6_jspPage=/html/pressreleaseportlet/article.jsp?groupId=201224&articleId=259349 and http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kaplan-higher-education-renames-all-california-schools-maric-college-73909162.html).

WEB-BASED UNIVERSITIES Kaplan College does not offer any online programs; all online programs are offered through Kaplan University.

ACCREDITATION Kaplan College campuses are each accredited by ACICS. There are no longer any campuses accredited by COE, so [Category:Educational institutions accredited by the Council on Occupational Education] was removed.

Kaplan College is a system of for-profit colleges in the United States and is owned and operated by Education Corporation of America.

History[edit]

Before being acquired by Education Corporation of America (ECA) in September 2015,[1][2] Kaplan College was part of Kaplan Higher Education, a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc.

Kaplan, Inc., purchased the American Institute of Commerce, a business training school founded in 1937, and renamed it Kaplan College in 2000, later renaming it to Kaplan University in 2004.[3]

In 2000, Kaplan acquired Quest Educational Corporation, which served 30 schools in 11 states.[4] Quest Education Corporation was renamed Kaplan Higher Education in 2002.[5]

In April 2004, Kaplan Higher Education owned 64 campuses, including Hesser College in New Hampshire and CEI College in California.[6]

California locations operated under the Maric College brand from 2004-2008, then as Kaplan College. In June 2008, Las Vegas-based Heritage College was folded into the Kaplan College brand. In 2010, the Texas schools acquired as part of the Quest purchase were renamed Kaplan College.

In October 2015, Kaplan College's Dayton campus was renamed Brightwood College.[7] The remaining Kaplan College locations are due to become Brightwood College by March 2016.[8]

Proposed changes to page[edit]

Hi - I have a few suggested edits to the Brightwood College page. For full disclosure, I am a contractor of Education Corporation of America, which owns Brightwood College. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Main section: Brightwood College, formerly Kaplan College, is an accredited for-profit post-secondary career college in the United States and is owned and operated by Education Corporation of America. Brightwood College awards certificates, diplomas and associate’s degrees related to specific professional fields such as health and medical, information technology, business, nursing, criminal justice, and trades.

Programs offered by Brightwood College focus on local employment needs and are taught by instructors with real-world experience. [1]

@Katie style: Hi there, I have reviewed the edit, and implemented most of the changes, choosing to omit some of the information, such as the sentence ending with "real-world experience", believing some of the content present there to be promotional, and unsuitable for Wikipedia.
