Language[edit]

Was'nt the languge at that time a form of Prakrit not yet formed into Sinhala yet ? Taprobanus (talk) 19:48, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK the best collection of articles about Sinhala language is
Gair, James (1998). Studies in South Asian Linguistics. New York: Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-509521-9. I have a copy of it. It says Insular Prakrit-> Sinhala Parkrit -> Archaic Sinhala -> Modern Sinhala. But essentially he is one of the experts of Sinhala language. On a different note, this kingdom is only known from literature that is Mahvamsa is the only known primary source for its existence. So the article has to make it clear that we have no archaeological evidence of this kingdom. But we do have archeological evidence of people living and trading in area that Mahavamsa says that this kingdom once existed. It has to be treated more like a legendary kingdom that was written about after 900 years of its existence. That is a long time to remember details via oral history alone isn’t it ? Lot of modern historians have speculated about this legendary Kingdom that I have some books on that I can add to it when I get time. It is also interesting that the Sanskrit term Tamirvarni which seemed to have been Prakritised to Tambapanni is used across the Palk Straights on both sides one for a river and another for a region, kind of alluding Indo Aryan speaking traders trading and settlement patterns in South India and Sri Lanka at that time. About the language if you have the sources then go ahead and please add it but im not sure about giving this kingdom and giving it the status of legendary, that could probably be debatable, however you do have a point.--Blackknight12 (talk) 08:26, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map featured mythical races - not sure if appropriate[edit]

The map in the info box on this page appears to be a fantasy map. Yakshas and nagas are mythical creatures in Hindu/Buddhist mythology/folklore. Brusquedandelion (talk) 09:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is really not appropriate. There is no evidence outside of these myths written centuries later that there existed people on the island going by these Indo-Aryan names of mythical creatures. Metta79 (talk) 17:46, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
