Gofraid mac Fearghus does not belong in this list. (a) On the separate wikipedia page devoted to him and linked here he is acknowledged as fictional. (b) This character (in the Annals of the Four Masters) is described as a son of the king of Airgialla - not himself the king.

Clearly such records as there are are far from complete, but even from what we can see the succession was not automatic/father-to-son. Nevertheless it seems to me that the character named as Gofraid mac Feargus may well have been a son of Foghartaigh mac Mael Breasal - even more so if (as I suggest elsewhere) the 835 date specified in AFM is really a scribal error for 845. The problem then becomes what the name underlying "Gofriad" may have been. Clearly it is not a simple misreading as "Gofraid" was intended - but it may be a name which it was not utterly infeasible to misconstrue in this way. Freuchie (talk) 11:01, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
