Allegedly
[edit]There does not appear to be any third-party confirmation that "the [Hellenic Central] intelligence service created the National League of Greek students in Italy and established offices in major university cities". This is something that was described (anonymously) by a single somewhat biased source: it may or may not be true. Unless someone can provide us with a credible citation from an independent source that the National League of Greek Students was established by the Greek intelligence services, this allegation clearly fails the criterion of verifiability. Therefore, it is preferable to distance ourselves from the allegation by using the term "allegedly". 79.131.175.180 (talk) 18:04, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
the fiat 500 - necessary to article?
[edit]Why is the fact that he drove a fiat 500 so important to the article that it requires a picture of one to be on the page? It is already mentioned that he drove it, fair enough, but the make and model of his car is not a defining aspect of his actions.
You could include a picture of street cleaners, as they were the first on the scene, and heard some of his final words - arguably a more important detail than the type of car he drove. There is certianly more emphasis placed on the cleaners than the car.
Also, remember the onus is on the contributing editor to justify the inclusion, not the removing editor. I don't disagree that it shows the type of car, but I do think that it's undue to the article. a_man_alone (talk) 16:20, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- I replied below but I will repeat my argument here: This picture, although not of the original car, helps the reader visualise how Georgakis went to the square the historic night of his suicide. It helps the visual reconstruction of an important part of that night's events. I am not sure how removing this picture helps improve the encyclopedia but I will wait to see the arguments. I also think that your are misinterpreting WP:BURDEN. I don't think it applies to images. I will ask for an RFC if you insist on that. Dr.K. λogosπraxis 16:33, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- It is not an important part of the nights event. It just happened to be his mode of transport on that night. Moreover, it's not even his own specific mode of transport, but rather a generic picture of a car like his. Although the phrasing of the burden policy does focus on references, the principle applies to any changes made to an article. Including a photo of a car like his is trivia and clutter, hence removing it improves the article. a_man_alone (talk) 16:48, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it seems that we cannot reach an agreement. I will consult WP:3O. Dr.K. λogosπraxis 16:53, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Edit warring about the Fiat 500 picture
[edit]Edit warring has erupted centred around the picture Kostas Georgakis drove to Mateoti Square the night of his death, a Fiat 500. This picture, although not of the original car, helps the reader visualise how Georgakis went to the square the historic night of his suicide. It helps the visual reconstruction of an important part of that night's events. I am not sure how removing this picture helps improve the encyclopedia but I will wait to see the arguments. Dr.K. λogosπraxis 16:26, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- 3O Response: Firstly I will point out that I think you're both editing in good faith and have presented reasonable arguments for and against. In this particular case I'm inclined to side with a_man_alone in that I don't think the specific vehicle of choice for Georgakis is salient to the article. If he'd ridden a particular model of pushbike we wouldn't be including a picture of it in the article. WP:IMAGE says 'images must be relevant to the article that they appear in and be significantly and directly related to the article's topic' (emphasis mine). While I agree that the car could be considered loosely relevant to the events, I don't believe it's integral enough to the person of Georgakis himself, nor of his suicide, to be considered 'significantly and directly related' to this article.
- Hopefully this opinion helps with your dispute. I will check back periodically but if you need further input from me, please be sure to let me know on my talk page so I can reply here. If this ultimately doesn't help you resolve your dispute, you may need to make use of other dispute resolution processes such as an RFC. TechnoSymbiosis (talk) 23:08, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you TechnoSymbiosis for taking the time to provide your opinion. I appreciate the good work you and the other editors at 3O are doing. Although I disagree, I take it that current consensus is against me and thus I will defer to it. It is also a rather minor matter and since I am busy I will not pursue this any further.
