Soft delete reverted

[edit]

Article undeleted 17 January 2023 at request of Tony 1212 (original delete reasons successfully contested, subject is notable on 2 criteria i.e. 4 albums on recognised indie label, >2 discussions in independent print/web sources) Tony 1212 (talk) 17:21, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Basic re-write/upgrade of article

[edit]

Since the article has just been rescued at my instigation from deletion on account of claimed non-notability of the subject person, I have attempted the start of a general re-write in more "encyclopedic" style rather than the previous somewhat random collection of (sometimes little notable) facts, accompanied by better sourcing, external links, etc. The article can be improved/expanded further I am sure, but now (at least hopefully) represents a better starting point... with apologies to any whose previous text has vanished (feel free to improve further). Notability

[edit]

I note that @Onel5969: has added the [non] "notability" tag to this article earlier today. Please note that this has already been discussed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion#Kristina_Olsen ... from my comment there:

her first 4 CDs were issued ... on Philo Records ... According to https://www.discogs.com/artist/1152108-Kristina-Olsen these albums were:

  • Kristina Olsen ‎(CD, Album) Philo CD PH 1147 1992
  • "Love, Kristina" ‎(CD, Album) Philo CD PH 1157 1993
  • Hurry on home ‎(CD, Album) Philo CD PH 1175 1995
  • Live From Around The World ‎(CD, Album) Philo CD PH 1195 1997

...I would contend that this satisfies the criterion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles, #5 "Has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e., an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are independently notable)." (Philo has existed for many years and released albums by many independently notable artists). ... She is also discussed in at least one independent article "Review by: William Echard (1997). Singer-Songwriters on Philo and Flying Fish. The Journal of American Folklore, 110(438), 423–439. doi:10.2307/541669" ... Also a web biography in Allmusic by Richard Skelly at https://www.allmusic.com/artist/kristina-olsen-mn0000774805/biography, plus a printed biography in "MusicHound Folk: The Essential Album Guide", p.609 (from copy on my shelf), which goes towards satisfying the criterion "Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself."

Accordingly I am removing the [non] notability tag; please discuss further here before unilaterally reinstating it. Tony 1212 (talk) 18:48, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting NMUSIC, only means the subject "may be notable", not is notable. There is not enough in-depth coverage to meet GNG currently. Onel5969 TT me 18:53, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I agree it is tricky in some cases, but if you read what is said in "MusicHound Folk: The Essential Album Guide" (unfortunately you will have to find the print version) I would contend she is quite as notable as other artists covered therein... I could quote that section in more detail (300 words+) but it would overload the WP article in my view. Note the title of that work as well is "The Essential Album Guide" indicating that it omits many artists that its compilers consider non notable.
"not enough in-depth coverage" is also a tricky one. I have added a couple more quotes from independent sources which I would contend addresses this, in my view, however I recognise that opinions may differ. Should I (or other) quote every review I can find? I am sure there are more, but I have tried just to give a general flavour... Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 19:29, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A few more edits per discussion with @User:Reading Beans on her "Talk" page (hoping I have the gender correct!), esp. with regard to adding "notability" criteria used to lede. Hopefully OK now, others can improve further in future of course... also pinging @User:Onel5969 to keep in this loop. Tony 1212 (talk) 01:46, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
