Lafayette or LaFayette?

[edit]

For those who advocate "LaFayette" instead of "Lafayette": I ran a Google search for "lafayette, Ohio", checking the first fifty results. Twenty of these I saw directly spoke of Lafayette/LaFayette; discounting the Scout troop from Lafayette Township in Medina County, sixteen referred to Lafayette, one to LaFayette, and two were Wikipedia (English and Volapük). Furthermore, the Census Factfinder result is for Lafayette, and the GNIS supports Lafayette: U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Village of Lafayette, the "civil" entry, has no variant names of any type, while U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Lafayette, the "populated place" entry, has only Lafayette Center, Laffayette, and Whittlesey, plus an official Board on Geographic Names decision for Lafayette in 1963. Moreover, by checking the entry for U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: De Graff (article), you can see that GNIS gives multiple listings when the only difference is capitalisation, whether DeGraff or Degraff, so that it's obvious that the GNIS listings are case-sensitive. I can see no basis for the claim that the article should be entitled LaFayette. Nyttend (talk) 03:16, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A quick scan of the State's own website confuses the matter further, as the frequent appearance of Lafayette is varied by occasional appearances of LaFayette. I suggest we'll need to contact the Secretary of State's office for the official word. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:06, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Searching official Ohio pages, the first three that I found that listed the municipality are this state auditor's page ("Lafayette" all five times), this state auditor's page ("Lafayette" all five times), and this Public Utilities Commission map ("Lafayette"). Where do you find village references on the state website? Not that I'm challenging you with a falsehood :-) I simply don't know where to look. Nyttend (talk) 14:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
