Maldonado/Newsom
[edit]California's Lt. Governor's office is vacant, Maldonado does not get to extend his term just because Newsom hasn't taken the oath of office yet!! Also, the designated successor after the Lt. Governor is Secretary of State Debra Bowen, a democrat. Even if I have the line of succession messed up, every major elected official in CA is a democrat . . .— Preceding unsigned comment added by CASportsfan (talk • contribs)
- Not according to the Los Angeles Times and other news sources (e.g., [1]). According to them, the Secretary of State indicated that Maldonado is still lieutenant governor until Newsom swears in. --Nlu (talk) 09:59, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
- I guess I was wrong . . . it is incredibly strange that the office wouldn't just be vacant for the 7 days—his term ended! Haha. --CASportsFan (talk) 08:25, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- For the record, the term does not end "until a successor qualifies" according to the California Constitution.http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/.const/.article_5 So it seems Maldonado actually did get to extend his term. Indeed, this is why Ronald Reagan was sworn in as Governor a few minutes after midnight, as his predecessor, Pat Brown, remained Governor until his successor (Reagan) took office.See bottom of page 172 to top of page 173 of Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power by Lou Cannon.
