  • Harold Ridley?: Removed Reverend Harold "Hap" Ridley, SJ, the 23rd President of Loyola College in Maryland because his own wikipedia page claims he attended Fordham, Woodstock College, and the Union Theological Seminary but not Holy Cross although there is mention he served on Holy Cross's board. I have a copy of the Holy Cross Alumni Directory (1843-1990); there's only one Ridley listed and he's not it. Was he on this list because he should be under the faculty section or some yet-to-be created section? --Georgeryp 07:40, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni (formerly on HC's main page Discussion)

  • If you're going to add alumni, please, let them be notable...so notable that perhaps they have Wikipedia articles already, or so notable that you, yourself, are willing to create an article for them instead of simply writing down all their accomplishments in the small space next to their name. It would also be appreciated if you did not remove any names that were there in the article when you got there unless you know it to be misinformation. For example, Timothy Leary did, in fact, briefly attend, so there is no reason to remove his name. The alumni that were recently added have been removed...you may add them back by checking the articles history and just putting them back in there, but please try to keep it a legitimate section of the article instead of a hodge podge of any remotely mentionable persons. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WordsEchoThus (talkcontribs) 20:27, Nov 12, 2005.
  • Notable Alumni List Improvements?:
  1. Very nice to see someone ( 68.187.225.58 on 22 February 2007) add years of graduation but the two-digit years are sort of a Y2K problem... For example, is '49, 1949 or 1849 or 2049? See BC's page where they currently give 4-digit years.
  2. A few photos might be nice (to shamelessly follow BC's page again). Good to see a Clarence Thomas photo was already added under alumni on HC's main page. --Georgeryp 08:33, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

QUESTION: OK, so I added a bunch of basketball players from the late 1990s, and they probably shouldn't be there but they were written about in a book called The Last Amateurs, so is this enough recognition? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.49.101.112 (talk) 16:45, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Same names

[edit]
  • A word of caution about name collisions. The wikilink [[Karen Baldwin]] formerly here redirected to a Karen Dianne Baldwin which, with a quick look, may have seemed to be the same person (since one is an HC 1985 grad and the other was Miss Canada 1982) but their middle names are different so I added the "E" middle initial here although it may rarely be used. Some other names (William J. McCarthy and Richard B. Fisher) weren't previously wikilinked here, probably in order to avoid similar name collisions, but I just added some descriptive term in their wikilinks to differentiate them (e.g. [[Richard B. Fisher (Federated_Securities)|Richard B. Fisher]]). I am unsure if this is the recommended practice or if a disambiguation page should be created? --Georgeryp 19:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

66.30.42.100

[edit]

A user at IP 66.30.42.100 removed several alumni in a series of edits on 22 May 2007. No reason for this was given in the edit comments or here. I left a question concerning this on that IP's talk page. No answer yet. I restored the removed names. --Georgeryp 18:28, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More silent removals from the same IP that needed restoring. Helpful people on IRC suggest this user may not be seeing notification of message on his talk page because of bugzilla:9213. Will do {{subst:test1a}}, {{subst:test2a}}, etc next if removals with no edit comment/justification continue. --Georgeryp 11:03, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of names

[edit]

Lists of names in this article should be sourced in accordance with WP:BLP. As there is no way of constantly maintaining linked articles, this applies to names which have a Wikipedia article as well as those that do not. Any name listed with no verifiable citations should be removed. Refer to WP:NLIST for guidance. (talk) 09:28, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DonnaHalper (talk) 03:12, 18 December 2011 (UTC) Under "Media," it lists former sportswriter (and former pro baseball player) Tim Murnane, without any verification. It also lists the year 1872. This is not likely, as he was playing semi-pro and then professional baseball in CT and Georgia at that time. His Wikipedia page also does not suggest that he was an alum of Holy Cross. He may have attended a preparatory school with that name, but I have seen no sources that can verify his graduation from the College of the Holy Cross. I am going to remove him from this list, but if there is proof somewhere, I'd be happy to put his name back.[reply]

DonnaHalper (talk) 03:57, 26 December 2011 (UTC) Since I posted the first time, I have contacted the Holy Cross alumni archives, and they find no evidence that he attended. There is a Timothy Murnane who was at their prep school, but it's a guy from Fitchburg MA with a different middle name, so this may be a case of a well-meaning researcher conflating the two people and assuming they were one and the same. They were not. Again, if evidence is found that he did in fact attend Holy Cross, I'll be happy to put his name back.[reply]
