Additions

Some Turk had included the name of many Persian literary figures and scientist among this list. Eigther he/She can not read correctly or there is something else wrong with that persoan. I corrected the list. Think about this before trying to change my corrections. --Mani1 14:43, 11 October 2004 (UTC)

Turkish Turks?

The article says it is a list of Turks with a link to the Turkish Turks but includes a lot of non-Turkish Turks. I removed some of the obvious ones and I know there are a few others I haven't the energy to touch yet. Maybe there is another list of famous Turkic culture historical figures they can be added to? Any ideas? --Stacey Doljack Borsody 21:13, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

User:E104421 is certainly one of the biggest problems for Wikipedia, for 90% of his edits are nationalistic motivated POV.
After his attemts to destroy the articles Hephthalites, Ghaznavids, etc, he has now started another attempted to turn Wikipedia into garbage.
I can't believe that this person is really claiming all kinds of historical people as citizens of Turkey.
He is claiming Mahmud of Ghazni, Fuzuli, even Hajji Bektash Wali, although these people were not from Anatolia, nor had any relation to the Oghuz Turks. Hajji Bektash Wali was not even Turkic.

  • First you should understand one important thing: You should provide reliable sources, like i always do. Before removing or deleting anything, you should also discuss the issue in the talk/discussion page. Furthermore, you should be civil at first. You're always accusing the ones who counters your arguments as nationalist and vandals. Your manner is well-known to many wikipedians. In my opinion, your impoliteness is the main problem, otherwise the issues would already been discussed and solved. However, you prevented all compromise attempts. I never edited the articles you mentioned above namely Mahmud of Ghazni, Fuzuli, even Hajji Bektash Wali. Furthermore, i'm not the one who prepared the list. I'm just opposing deletion without reason. Regards. E104421 22:19, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Rename?

If this article is a list of Turkish people (Turks of Turkey), rather than Turkic peoples in general, I propose that this article be renamed to List of Turkish people - to avoid ambiguity. Thoughts? Khoikhoi 00:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

It sounds good to me since I was soliciting for suggestions like this above. The list seems rather too specific to be any sort of list of Turkic people and I note the other lists in the "See also" section that are examples of being more specific. It might be informative also to have a list of historical figures recognized as being famous across the Turkic world, ie. Kul Tegin. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 01:34, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Concur. A mention of famous historical Turkic people is not wrong, however it should be in a seperate section with a correct intro. I don't want to be edit warring over this article, so I think that the inclusion in that list should be reserved to famous Turks who have somehow contributed to the formation of Turkish people as they are now, or Turks who have contributed to the formation of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire (meaning Anatolian Turkish princedoms, people like AlpArslan who won the war that led to the migration of Turks to reach Anatolia etc). Modern Turkic figures shouldn't be included however. The litmus test should be their place in the timeline leading to actual Turkish people and Turkey: AlpArslan is understandable, however the president of Turkmenistan is not, for example.Baristarim 00:29, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorting by name or occupation

Well ? :Tri outlaw 16:38, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

(cur) (last) 01:43, 25 December 2006 Baristarim (Talk | contribs | block) m (→D - who is dilek bulut.. + it might be good to structure this article differently at one point (history+republican for example), seems bizarre to add sultans next to supermodels :)))
I agree with Barış that we should reorganize this list by occupation rather than by name. Compare to List of Italians, List of Greeks, List of Albanians, etc. Khoikhoi 02:00, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Tags

The article was renamed, many names weeded out (including ones that were added by anons just for kicks) and I think that the article has settled down. There are only four-five red links left, but I know that they are notable people without articles at the moment, so unless there are other objections about any names, the tags should be removed. So are all the names ok either per notability or ethnicity/nationality-wise? Baristarim 11:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

The person who disputed the article was Tajik, so we should probably ask him. However, the article looks fine to me, and I would support removing the tags until new arguments are brought forth. Khoikhoi 11:13, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Good but in need of classifications

This is a very good and extensive list, but it would benefit quite a lot from having the people in it organised according to what they are famous for. That's the way most similar lists are compiled. The present format is good for small people with only a few very famous individuals, but with so many famous Turks in different areas, we should reorganise this list. Split or delete

I believe this page runs afoul of WP:NOT#Wikipedia_is_not_a_directory. How can we possibly hope to compile a list of all Turkish people?--Adoniscik (talk) 23:13, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

turks living abroad

i have found a list of notable turkish people living overseas- its avery long list (246 people) so i think we should add these people aswell. http://www.columbia.edu/~sss31/Turkiye/turks-os.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.158.57.183 (talk) 13:56, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Who is Turkish ?

Exactly, what does Turkish people mean ? Citizen of Turkey ? People living (or lived) in Turkey ? People who consider themselves as Turkish ? People who speak (or spoke) a dialect of Turkish ? In the list most of the names belong to people who fulfil all these charecteristics simultaneously. But there are also some names whose Turkish identity is highly questionable. Take an example of Tulunids (#64) . Were they Turk ? Ethnically yes. But aside that they almost had nothing in common with Turks. And supposing they are considered to be Turk, then where are the other historical celebrities such as Bilge Khan, Kaşgarlı Mahmut, and Alp Arslan ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 09:03, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Sources

Here are sources which prove that E104421 is wrong. He should appologize for distracting people and for purposely trying to falsefy history and facts [1]:

"... The reign of Esmail is one of the most important in the history of Persia. The reasons for this are twofold: firstly, prior to his accession in 907/1501, Persia, since its conquest by the Arabs eight-and-a-half centuries earlier, had not existed as a separate entity but had been ruled by a succession of Arab caliphs, Turkish sultans, and Mongol khans. During the whole of this period, only under the Buyids (q.v.) did a substantial part of Persia come under Persian rule (334-447/945-1055) ..." Encyclopaedia Iranica
"... Today, the consensus among Safavid historians is that the Safavid family hailed from Persian Kurdistan ..." Encyclopaedia Iranica

And now it's E104421 turn to appologize!

Dispute

List says This is a list of notable citizens of the Republic of Turkey. But there are many historical person in this list. Takabeg (talk) 12:12, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

I removed Template:Turkish people by country. This template is related with Category:Ethnic Turkish people, but this list is related with Category:Turkish people. Takabeg (talk) 12:16, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Restructuring the article

I've restructured the article by classifying the people in it according to what they are famous for. Quite many names on the list did not mention their clame to fame and I'll include the list of these people below. They are not in the article at the moment, but please feel free to add whomever of them to the right category. A possible problem is that some categories are quite small while a few are much too extensive. I'm thinking about the category Musicians in particular. We should definitely keep the more famous singers in, but there are far too many in this category at the moment and not all of them are very notable. My suggestion would be to keep the categories on Sultans and on Politicans as they are, somewhat reduce the category on Musicians and to expand the other categories. JdeJ 14:50, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

People not currently on the list

The following people were in the alphabetical list but without any reason given for their inclusion. Please feel free to include whomever you would want into the right category. As written above, it might be a good idea not to add any more names to the categories Musicians or Politicans, but other categories are in need of more names.

Redundant section

There are two lists: Authors (section 8) and Turkish writers (section 64) I am planning to merge them. Any suggestion ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:39, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Well, no suggestion. I merged the two sections, cleared 42 duplicates and reduced the size of the artice by about 1.3 kB. I also used column display in long lists for better browsing. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:20, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Historical names

I cleared out the names before Turkish history. (Ottoman, Tulonoğlu, etc.) Although still somewhat messy, the article is now a bit clearer.Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 09:23, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Turkish people?

According to the Wikipedia article of Turkish people, "The Turkish people, or the Turks, (Turkish: Türkler), are an ethnic group primarily living in Turkey, and in the former lands of the Ottoman Empire where Turkish minorities have been established." Therefore, there is a serious contradiction with this article that says Turks are "citizens of the Republic of Turkey. By country are these people living or born in Turkey but has Turkish descent and their roots are from the respective countries." There are plenty of ethnic Armenians, Greek, and other non-Turks on this list which I am planning to remove if there are no objections. The whole controversy of the definition of the word "Turkish citizenship" in the Turkish Republic should not be spilled into Wikipedia. Proudbolsahye (talk) 05:43, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Title is too ambiguos
