Tri-State Tornado[edit]

I meant to leave a more detailed edit summary of the chocolate tornado but I pressed Enter by accident. What I was going to say was, the article quotes some guy from UCAR in saying there is uncertainty as to whether it was a single tornado or a family. However, saying there is uncertainty is not the same as saying there is debate; pretty much all scientists agree that it was a single tornado for the majority of its path, including Tom Grazulis, probably the foremost authority on historic tornadoes, in his book Significant Tornadoes 1680–1991; as well as Chuck Doswell, one of the foremost authorities in severe weather in this presentation, which quite unfortunately is a dead link and the archive does not seem to be working. It is listed over and over and over as the deadliest single tornado in US history by authoritative sources and without caveats.

It is quite remarkable, the completeness and consistency of the tornado damage path (shown in this other piece by Doswell; unfortunately he does not repeat the claim that it was clearly a single tornado). It is also quite impressive that they have managed to reconstruct the path so completely from historical data. The data is in stark contrast to most other historical tornado paths of over 100 miles, where gaps in the damage are long and there are areas where damage is suspected to be non-tornadic. Unfortunately the online sources are spotty, but Grazulis is quite clear in his book that the Tri-State Tornado was almost definitely a single tornado (summarized here on his website, and this seems to be the general consensus of the scientific community. I feel I have made a significant case to change the wording back to how it was; any objections? -RunningOnBrains^(talk) 04:40, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1996 Bangladesh Tornado[edit]

This article, 1996 Bangladesh tornado, refers to a 1996 tornado in Bangladesh which killed over 600 people. However, the citations in the article seem to be unclear on whether this toll was from a single tornado or a tornado outbreak. Should this tornado, or information on this outbreak, be added to this page? It is possible that the article linked is simply wrong about the event as it is written by one user and seems to contain some errors.

Quad State revision[edit]

The revision reflecting that the Tri-state's record has been superseded (aka broken) is premature to say the absolute least. First and foremost, is because the question of whether it really was ONE tornado and not a family is still being evaluated by the NWS survey team. Secondly, and this ties back into the first point, the survey is still ongoing and remains incomplete; Until the National Weather Service officially announces/verifies this fact, it remains unconfirmed. This is further supported by the fact that the article covering the December 10 - 11th outbreak states that it remains unknown as to whether it was one tornado or a family. Again, until such time as the Weather Service confirms it...you are jumping the gun. Given this is a meteorological event, the go-to authority for sources is NOT the standard media channels from other events, we are to rely on information provided from the National Weather Service instead, and according to the latest from them...the prevailing opinion is that Quad-State was a family of tornadoes. So, once again...reverting back to the November version of the article. Please do not change it back to reflect quad-state's questionable existence, without a citation from the Weather Service.
