general comments from reader - seems to be a lot missing here =

I'm juts a guy who came here to do research on what to use. I'm a mac guy, not windows. But the obvious gaps are pretty obvious - beginning with Carbon Copy Cloner for mac - one of the best and most used cloners out there. Next, where's Driveimage XML, whcih seems to get a lot of respect recently? Just sayin, if you make a list, it needs to be somewhat complete or to the neophyte its actually misleading. Added dd (Unix) to the article. Don't know if it's a complete disc cloning software, added the link to See also, until someone knows better. citation for SuperDuper!

SuperDuper! is tagged with "citation needed." I've used this program with Mac's for several years now and it does a fine job of duplicating hard drives. I use them as bootable backups, though you could also just back up parts and pieces and not use the full duplication features. How about fogproject? "FOG is a Linux-based, free and open source computer imaging solution for Windows XP, Vista and 7 that ties together a few open-source tools with a php-based web interface. FOG doesn't use any boot disks, or CDs; everything is done via TFTP and PXE. Also with fog many drivers are built into the kernel, so you don't really need to worry about drivers (unless there isn't a linux kernel driver for it). Snarespenguin, I was going to dispute your edit, just as I had begun to dispute your edits of List of data erasing software and List of disk partitioning software. However, after taking some time to "cool down" and research this matter, I discovered that:

• your edit seems to use Comparison of disk encryption software as a model (the title of which I think should be changed back to List of disk encryption software)
• this article should avoid being grown in scope from a mere list (such as the aforementioned) to a comparison (e.g. Comparison of disc image software and Comparison of disk cloning software)

My concern regarding your edit is moot now. This article is useless to me; I'll just refer to Comparison of disk cloning software in the future. -JohnAlbertRigali (talk) 16:39, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Gparted live cd can clone partitions

Gparted live cd, is definitely also a disk cloning software, rather than just a partitioning tool primarily.. Not well known to be used as a "simplified" solution for cloning but the usage of Gparted live cd can easily be used to perform a partition cloning. Gparted can clone partitions, and cannot clone an entire disk. Even if the "target" partition is larger than the source, there wouldn't be a problem since the cloning operation would be filesystem-based.Cloning a partition with Gparted is mere copy & paste using the mouse (right context menus). The target partition does not need to be already formatted with a filesystem, whereby the partition's layout simply only needs to have been allocated it's space on the disk. If the partition is not formatted and there was a 'paste' for cloning, then a filesystem would first be created before cloning begins.

Partition cloning with gparted occurs only as partition-to-partition, and not partition-to-diskimage(known as dump).

Ghost

I've applied a 'yes' status for maintenance because customer support is still provided.. Looking over again I don't this might include software patches, since "via phone, email and knowledge base" on their website.. Sometimes products do get patches, but it doesn't look like in this case. I think you were correct in setting it to no.
