Why are district attorneys included in the list?

[edit]

Am I missing something, or are prosecutors not part of law enforcement? I'm aware of New York State Court Officers Shushugah (talk) 19:49, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Motor vehicle clerks are not sworn police officers and yet the DMV is listed under this section. Judges are not police officers yet the Unified Court System is listed here as well.
The article lists state entities that employee sworn police officers. It does not make any claim that the entity solely employees police personnel which obviously is not the case for any governmental entity. An agency that employs sworn police officers also employs support staff, scientific and technical persons, accountants, etc.
Similarly each county in New York has a District Attorneys office. In that office you have the District Attorney and Associate District Attorneys who are part of the judiciary and are ( generally ) not sworn or certified police officers.
However, the office also employees sworn police officers who act independently from the city police departments and the county sheriffs in their jurisdictions. Generally the law enforcement branch of a district attorneys office ( when one exists ) primarily employs sworn police investigators and/or sworn police officers with specialized skills. The enforcement arm of these offices are usually involved in more complex investigations and/or investigations with a higher degree of sensitivity. The DAs office enforcement group would likely be the policing agency that investigates corruption ( as well as various federal and state agencies ). They usually lead organized crime investigations particularly in relation to illegal gambling. Some DA offices do major crimes, and some have personally hobbyhorses such as Albany County’s blatantly unconstitutional impaired driving “initiatives” 67.240.35.58 (talk) 00:54, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
