Photos of artificial specimens

[edit]

Hi all. I've just noticed that two of the photos on this article, including the one in the infobox, are pictures of artificial kelp as is used in some public Aquariums, not the real thing. I can tell because I work in an Aquarium myself and deal with the plastic stuff all the time. I'm hesitant to remove the image at the head of the article, because it does give readers a pretty good idea of what macrocystis looks like, but I'm going to go ahead and remove the image of the holdfast, as the plastic holdfasts on artificial strands don't look much like the real thing. If anyone objects, I think we ought to at least label the pic as an artificial example.--Grapplequip (talk) 00:44, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's not plastic, but an actual specimen from the California Academy of Sciences Aquarium. Aquarium holdfasts will look different because of the lack of tidal stress that occurs under natural conditions. --EncycloPetey (talk) 04:24, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maximum Size

[edit]

In the introduction it states tat giant kelp may grow "Over 45m" later on in the article (and in other wiki articles linking here.) it says "up to 50m" while these clearly give the same general figure, would it be possible to agree on a standard number to use in the article?
