I put 馬德拉島蛋糕into babel fish and it roughly translated to "Horse? 拉 island 蛋?" Does anyone know enough Japanese to know if this matches the context of the article?--Vercalos 07:53, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It would help if you tried Chinese rather than Japanese. Google translator gets it 100% correct, translating 馬德拉島蛋糕 into Madeira cake. The first three characters are pronounced Madela to sound like Madeira, and their literal meaning "Horse Virtue Pull" is not relevant. The next one indeed means Island, since Madeira cake is named after the Madeira islands, and the last two mean cake (literally "Egg Cake", the usual word for Western-style cakes as opposed to traditional Chinese pastries and puddings). ralmin (talk) 04:35, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
