Why was it called Maplin?

I'm curious as to why the company was called Maplin. None of the founders were named Maplin, so where did the name come from? 86.141.24.6 (talk) 22:11, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The first location was near to Maplin Sands. Their 1970s catalogue, along with the slinky woman in the '70s maxi-dress, had a Concorde on it and the tagline "Maplin - site of London's third airport". Of course, that never happened. Diaph0nous (talk) 15:04, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I recall at the time controversy about building 'Maplin airport'. It was it the news for a while then Labour cancelled the project.
Soon after that Maplin electronics appeared which I assumed just pig-backed on the name which was familiar to most people. This sort of thing seams to often happen. Some years later hundreds of companies popped up with JR in the name despite JR being the 'villain' 80.88.222.181 (talk) 20:01, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
