Proposed deletion

[edit]

Oppose -- recommend merge-and-redirect instead. I can understand (and do not specifically contest) the reasons for the proposed deletion (article apparently fails WP:ORG, WP:ATHLETE, WP:FOOTYN (non-professional) notability criteria). However, I would suggest that conversion to a redirect would be more appropriate, since that will allow the category membership to be retained, even after the article content is merged into Merrow, Surrey#Merrow F.C..

No personal involvement with club, I just happen to live in Merrow, and it's on my watchlist... -- EdJogg (talk) 13:37, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree with a merge. -- Alexf(talk) 14:41, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Query --- when this article was first created (2006) the club were in the Combined Counties League and hence qualified for playing in the FA Cup. Two years later, the club dropped a couple of divisions, and now at Level 12 they no longer qualify. Hence, the club used to meet one of the criteria for Footy notability. Shouldn't this notability persist, regardless of the current level of the club? If the club no longer existed, as of 2006, it would still technically be WP-notable, surely? -- EdJogg (talk) 14:02, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. It is something to be discussed more at length at WT:FOOTY but I see the logic in it. Personally, if it could be shown it was once in the notable leagues, through sourcing, it should then still be notable. -- Alexf(talk) 14:41, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I found a series of archives of the Combined Counties League, so I've included these as refs. Teams in this league are eligible for participation in the FA Cup / FA Trophy, I believe, although I don't know whether Merrow have ever taken part during their 88-year history. Is that sufficient to un-PROD? -- EdJogg (talk) 02:12, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Merrow FC page in Internet Archive

[edit]

Digging around I found both the official site for the Combined Counties league, (which includes some statistics and tables in their archives, mentioning Merrow) and that they had pages for each club. Merrow's page has been deleted, but may be found via the Wayback Machine:
