Inquiry about edits
[edit]Hi @davidgerard
Please let me know how I can make this complaint. This isn’t spam, I’m a professional writer and assist the photographers studio with these items. Cryptohydrate (talk) 23:22, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Well then you might have another issue. A COI if you work for anyone or anything (company) you are writing for or about. — Moops ⋠T⋡ 23:24, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

- Secondly, only use solidly Reliable Sources, not promotional or crypto sources. Thirdly, don't write it like a presx release. Firstly, don't make the edits as that's a blatant commercial COI - David Gerard (talk) 01:03, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you David. I'll review reliable sources now. I'm happy to provide more information so you and other admins can come to a general consensus if it's COI or not. Cryptohydrate (talk) 23:09, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks David! I am not officially employed by the studio, just a collector of his work and I pitch in to help. I’ll read the COI and make the needed edits. Cryptohydrate (talk) 11:32, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi David,
I believe my contribution falls under advocacy, and I am going to try and reduce the size of the NFT section so the article is balanced, removing any sections that I can’t back up with references.
If I have written articles about the the photographer, would it be COI to include them if I am not making any revenue from the articles? Please let me know. Cryptohydrate (talk) 11:44, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Also wanted to ask, for the bio pic, am I able to change it to a photo the photographer owns with his permission or does he need to make that single edit since he owns the rights to that photo? Cryptohydrate (talk) 11:47, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Wanted to clarify, came to edit the page since it wasn’t updated and an NFT section had been added long ago which didn’t reflect updated information about the collection. I wasn’t specifically asked to make these edits, wanted to help out. Thanks all. Cryptohydrate (talk) 12:04, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
I’ll review general editing guidelines before proceeding so I don’t miss any more steps. Open to any additional feedback. Cryptohydrate (talk) 12:12, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Based on feedback from you and another user, I'll skip adding NFT related info entirely until the article's current content has proper citations/references.

[edit]After reviewing the article, there's numerous claims which lack references. I'm working to research and add what can be proven on the websites of the organizations mentioned. Cryptohydrate (talk) 13:57, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
COI
[edit]Hi all,
Drew here, I'm a fan of Mike and I've read many of his books and have written articles about him. I contacted his studio for some clarifications about this article and got their permission to upload the profile picture. They provided some clarifications about dates and awards. Ongoing effort.
Open to any feedback in making sure this article is neutral, complies with BLP policy, and doesn't make claims without citations.

- Understood. Is the studio able to make this edit? I can email them and ask. I contacted them and got permission to add it, but yes, complaint coming from them directly. Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback.

- @Cryptohydrate: They would be, yes. But you may want to wait for the AfD consensus to be closed one way or the other so that they do not feel it is a waste of their time, per what I wrote on Commons, it is:
For future article subjects, see WP:OTRS for an easier way and WP:REQFREE for general advice. It's inappropriate to pretend to self-publish a photograph that you took yourself when here you say you did not and even the metadata has it marked © Michael Yamashita. Please be more careful in future about making false legal claims regarding the ownership of copyright over photographs, and welcome. Psiĥedelisto (talk • contribs) please always ping! 22:16, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[…] [U]nclear what the need for [this photo would be] if the article is deleted after its AfD but it's allowed to have photos about subjects that don't pass English Wikipedia's GNG on Commons as other language Wikipedias/other Wikimedia projects have different standards.
- Understood. I definitely did not take the photograph, was unclear on the process, and wrongfully assumed if I had permission from the copyright holder that I could upload it myself. I will review the image upload process thoroughly before uploading any images on any other Wikipedia pages. I'll hold off on further action until AfD consensus is completed.

[edit]- I added some additional citations and references about this photographer on the deletion discussion page, which may be useful. Referenced WP:HOPh guidelines to try and locate qualifiers for the “notable” category Cryptohydrate (talk) 22:16, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- If you have any resources about how to differentiate between CV items and main page items, that would be extremely helpful @womenartistupdates Cryptohydrate (talk) 22:17, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Cryptohydrate, An editor should pick important exhibitions rather than listing every show a artist has been in. This is an encyclopedia article, not a grant application or a catalogue biography. Take a look at WP:ARTIST. I should also add that writing about living people falls under more scrutiny than dead people. Writing a biography of a living person (BLP) is not a good place to start learning about the editing process. You may want to look at some exisiting articles in Category:20th-century American photographers to get an idea of citations and writing style. Take a look at Mariana Cook. Happy editing. Don't be discouraged if the Yamashita article gets deleted. It is on the border. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:51, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have definitely shifted to easier stuff like small townships on the East Coast.

Exhibitions
[edit]Michael Yamashita is considered a world-renowned photographer in the Eastern Hemisphere[2] for his work with National Geographic Channel Asia. His photographs have been shown at the Perpignan[3] and La Gacilly Photo Festivals,[4] the Carter Center in Atlanta,[5] the National Gallery of Art, Decentral Art Pavilion[6] during the Venice Biennale, Museo d'Arte Orientale[7] in Italy, and the LA County Museum of Art. He has also done several exhibitions[8] with the Reignwood Cultural Foundation, founded by the Reignwood Group.

Additional Citations & Info
[edit]Note: There's another list of citations I've found on the deletion discussion page.
Found a MSM interview of Michael Yamashita with Tammy La Gorce, featured 10/10/2004 in the New York Times. He was also featured in a real estate article from 2000.
Thought this was useful based on WP:HOPH criteria.
Other things of interest:
Wall Street Journal, feature of 15 photographs from December 12 2012. Capturing Tibet.
Photograph feature in the Washington Post - 2012. Samurai.
Featured in LA times in 2003 showing at Enisen Gallery with photos from Iraq.
Lastly, it appears the Nature Conservancy uses Mike's photos, here's an example.
There's also apparently a Business Weekly article featuring Michael from 2005, (pages 192-197) cited in a Zheng He book, can't seem to dig up the Business Weekly archive, and not sure if it qualifies as MSM.
None of this info is exhaustive, just what I had time to find tonight.
Below - bunch of contributions. Question: Since these features of just a few photos, would these fall under CV and thus not be cited? Or is it worth adding to contributions? It appears many of his photographs are licensed through CORBIS. @WomenArtistUpdates

- Cryptohydrate Try looking at it this way; Yamashita is a photographer by trade. He is very successful at his job. Piling on examples of clients using his work does not contribute to what makes him notable. Please take a look at look at WP:ARTIST. The lede of the article states his many iconic photographs. I am not seeing actual examples of iconic photographs except for the stamp. An example of an iconic photograph is Afghan Girl by Steve McCurry. Can you direct the reader to such an example in Yamashita's portfolio? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:51, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
- Very helpful. I was previously referencing WP:HoPh
- I will review this. From my knowledge of him, the Zheng He and Silk Road documentaries may be among his most notable work. Thank you again. Cryptohydrate (talk) 03:07, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Exhibition Citations
[edit]Hi all,
WP:HOPh and WP:HPHOTOG state in regards to notability criteria: whose work has appeared in at least one solo exhibition that has been noted in more than a merely local press.
I provided 3 examples here of solo exhibitions and there's several more when using newspaper sources.
Are these sufficient sources to satisfy this citation need?
There are other sources on the prior deletion page that may be useful.
The exhibition section was moved to the [page] (above), citing that the bio does not function as a CV, but I believe that we could use that data to cite the claim of "iconic exhibitions" in the first sentence of the bio. Cryptohydrate (talk) 15:44, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
