Ambiguity of "Congolese"

[edit]

From the viewpoint of someone from the Republic of Congo, or someone who has an interest in, or some other relationship with, the country, referring to it as "Congo" and "Congolese" will seem completely natural. Of course, and it should be like that - to a closed audience that already understands the Congo being talked about. However, for an audience - half of which thinks that Africa is a country - more clarity is needed from the beginning. Imagine the reader from Japan, or Pakistan or Chile - "Congolese" needs to be defined before it can be used with familiarity. I've met quite a few people from the Republic of Congo who tell me that they usually just refer to their country as "Congo" and that they are "Congolese" - fine, but so do the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In my opinion a distinction should be made clear in the opening sentence, as in my edit here. Francis Hannaway (talk) 21:40, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The opening sentence as it presently stands says: "Michel Ngakala is a Congolese military officer and politician who is a leading member of the Congolese Labour Party (PCT), the ruling party in the Republic of the Congo..." Everyking (talk) 01:32, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
