Article title "Microbes and man" is sexist, must be moved to "Microbes and humans"
[edit]The article title "microbes and man" is sexist, we must move the article to "microbes and humans". Andreas Mamoukas (talk) 14:31, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- The first title I considered for the new article was "Microbes in culture", in line with the series of articles that I've created on "Living things in culture", Plants in culture, etc. I couldn't use the matching "Microbes in culture", as "culture" can mean "a microbial culture on an agar jelly" and this wasn't an article about how to make nutrient media. I tried "Microbes in human culture" to dilute the problem but it's klunky and not entirely free of ambiguity. "Microbes and humans" lacks the alliterative ring that presumably attracted Postgate's publishers to release a book under the title of "Microbes and Man" (4th edition 2008, so it's still current). Both probably fail to suggest this is about culture, sounding more like social aspects of disease, perhaps. If we have to change the current title, I think we'd best go back to "Microbes in human culture" which is at least clear. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:13, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Just came across this at Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous). I agree with the reasons given by Chiswick Chap that though klunky, "Microbes in human culture" is probably the best title. I also wanted to say that this is a great article! Thanks for all of the work that must have been put into it! ‑‑YodinT 15:58, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:02, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Microbes and human culture sounds good. I did not know of the book Microbes and Man, I will send to the publishers of the book an email to ask them to change the sexist title if they release a new edition of the book. Andreas Mamoukas (talk) 17:50, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
