Suffice it to say Miljan, or "Čiča", and it is all clear to everyone who ever interested in football. Human Gromada, football legend, a man outside of space and time, a man of history. Briefly and clearly,there is one Miljan Miljanić.

Miljan was born on 4 May 1930 in Bitola, Vardar Banovina (then Kingdom of Yugoslavia) in the family is originally from Bunyan near Niksic in Montenegro, and the first year of life is spent in Macedonia. During his rich career Miljanic coached Red Star, Real Madrid, Valencia and the Yugoslav national team on two occasions, in two world championships in Germany in 1974 and 1982 in Spain. With Red Star he won ten titles, and with Real Madrid he won two championship titles and one Spanish Cup, won by double crown in the season 1974/1975. However, he is most remembered as a phenomenal theorist, football tactician and as president of FSJ, a place that he occupied for twenty years, before retiring in 2001. Of "Achievement for the development of football" in the country, FSJ Assembly proclaimed 2001 Miljanic for lifelong honorary president of FSJ.

Miljanić and Red Star’s hard-shooting kids (1966-1974)

Miljan Miljanić was a football player in Red Star back in the glorious 50s, but it was his position of the first coach in the summer of 1996 that he found the right for him and the club. Miljanić was a leader of the new orientation in the club – relying on its own forces. In the first season he completely changed the generation of players and won the fifth place, the same as one year before. And after that triumphs began.

The generation led by Dragan Džajić, officially the best player in the history of this country (the choice of the Football Association on the 50th anniversary of UEFA) and certainly one of the best left wings in the history of the world, will leave a deep mark and make a great difference compared to all the greatest rivals. It will be the first time Red Star has won three championships in a row (two times double crown), and every child in Yugoslavia will know the names of Dujković, Đorić, Dojčinovski, Klenkovski, Karasije, Aćimović, Lazarević, Krivokuća, Ostojić... It is of special importance to know that most of the above mentioned football players joined Marakana very early and went through many selections in the club’s youth school.

At that time Red Star became a sound name on the European level as well, setting standards which only a small number of clubs from the east could follow. It was focusing on Yugoslav Cup in 1971 that made the league’s second worst placement ever – the sixth place – and that impression was improved by winning the Cup. Miljanić will win another Cup with the team, in 1973, and some new names will already appear among the players, such as Vladimir and Ognjen Petrović, Bogićević, Filipović, Keri... Many of them will, at the end of the eight decade, lead Red Star into the new era of great triumphs.

Apart from bringing lots of joy to its supporters, in that era Red Star was a club that was watched with pleasure: during the eight years of Miljanić’s leadership, seven times it was the most efficient club in the league (in 1972 Velež scored one goal more), and in the last two seasons it left its rivals first by 12, and then by 18 scores.

Real Madrid 1974 / 1975 - Yugoslav era begins

After a terrible run in the League the previous season and Miguel Muñoz's departure as coach, Yugoslavian Miljan Miljanic took the reins of the team. Real Madrid's run in the League couldn't have been more spectacular: they won the title by 12 points. Miguel Muñoz left the team after coaching it for 14 years. Legendary player Ignacio Zoco also left and a farewell match was held in his honour, during which the new coach and new signings, such as German player Paul Breitner, the Argentine Roberto Martínez and Uría, were officially presented to the fans.

The high hopes set on Miljanic soon paid off. The team defeated Valencia at Mestalla 2-1 on Matchday 1, beginning a brilliant run in which they stood undefeated until Matchday 14, when they lost in Bilbao 1-0. This defefat didn't damper their hopes and they went on to stay undefeated for another 12 weeks in a billiant second round. Real Madrid won the title on 27 April 1975 in Madrid by drawing a game; there were still five fixtures left in the League. The Whites were 'kings' again thanks to Miljan Miljanic, winning the competition by 12 points. They were the top scoring side with 66 strikes and the second team to concede the least number of goals (34). Real Madrid won Copa del Rey after the penalty shootout against the Athletico Madrid. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco had the tradition of giving the trophy itself to the coach who achieved the title.The last coach who has received the cup from the hands of Franco was Miljan Miljanić.

Second Title 1975-1976

The Yugoslavian coach had inflicted his special touch on the team, based on technique and hard work, as well as his winning mentality. Guerini, Sánchez Barrios, Andrés and Sol were the new signings for the season. Real Madrid's strong run in the first half of the competition was crucial in taking the title. They stood undefeated 14 weeks, winning eight games and drawing five. They were defeated 1-0 on Matchday 15 by Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Despite not having such a brilliant run in the second part of the League, their efforts were enough to crown them as champions once again. Atletico and Barcelona were also strong contenders for the title, but lost their chances when Real Madrid won the championship in the game before last by defeating Granada at the Bernabéu. The Whites ended the competition with five points more than Barcelona and six more than Atletico. They conceded the least number of goals (26) and keeper Miguel Ángel won the Zamora Trophy.

Under the auspices of UEFA and FIFA he held a numberless seminars on almost every continent where football was played, shoulder to shoulder with legends of European and World football. In March 2002 FIFA President Joseph proposed The Honorary President of FSJ Miljan Miljanić for "Order of Merit" because of his contribution to football. Blatter said that Miljanic in the previous four decades did a lot for football, gave his the whole game as a player and as a coach and as an official. In any case he achieved remarkable results. Miljan Miljanić received the award at the FIFA Congress on 29th of May, same year in Seoul. Miljan's name was written in history together with the biggest names of world football such as Sir Stanley Raus, Dr. Joao Avelange, Sir Bobby Charlton, Dino Zoff, Pele, Lav Yashin ...

In addition to outstanding coaching career and years of service in the Yugoslav football home, Miljan is remembered for its (now famous) statements. When as a Yugoslavian national team manager when asked what is the tactic will he use in the upcoming game, he replied: "offensive defensive." To the charges that he unlawfully obtained material gain he reacted sharply: "What do you think, that I have returned to Serbia for money? Abroad, I earned for my grandchildren's grandchildren." When asked whether he feel "political pressure on FSJ," he replied as a rifle: "The only pressure I feel is atmospheric, I just returned from Budva, and I can feel a little difference ..."

As a guest in the studio at the opening of Euro '96 : "Bulgarian customs officer told me that he know that we cheered for them when they f...ed the Germans ( 2-1 in USA 1994 World Football Championship quarter-finals)."
