This article has a hoax

[edit]

A group of editors such as TheCartoonEditor are repeatedly adding an obvious hoax to this article claiming that misal pav comes from German cities like Berlin and Stuttgart, when it in fact comes from the state of Maharashtra in India. The citation given for this hoax is false. Do these editors have anything to justify their behaviour? 202.142.118.212 (talk) 07:36, 30 May 2021 (UTC) This hoax was originally introduced on 30 January 2021. 202.142.118.212 (talk) 08:46, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@202.142.118.212: @Doggy54321: Hi. I originally came to this issue from this edit, which was marked as bad faith. Can you explain why adding a regional variant (I know Misal pav is from India and not Berlin) is vandalism? Doggy and I are not claiming Misal pav comes from Berlin (as we would have changed the lead of the article as part of the "hoax". TheCartoonEditor (talk) (contribs) 13:06, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, this is not a hoax, as the Wikipedia guideline on hoaxes says Do not deliberately add hoaxes, incorrect information, or unverifiable content to articles. The information is not a hoax (a deliberate falsehood), the information is not incorrect, and the information is verifiable (we have a source backing it up). Our edits are also not vandalism, as the Wikipedia guideline on vandalism defines vandalism as editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose, which is to create a free encyclopedia, in a variety of languages, presenting the sum of all human knowledge. That article goes on to say Even if misguided, willfully against consensus, or disruptive, any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia is not vandalism, and, since our edits were made in good faith, our edits are not vandalism. I'm not here to be accused of spreading a hoax and vandalizing. D🐶ggy54321 (let's chat!) 13:23, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
After further investigation, I can see that the hoax did not (presumably) originate with either of you but with some annonymous vandal on 30 January, however you are perpetuating the hoax by being exceptionally lazy editors. Even a minute's effort would reveal to you that misal pav is not widely available anywhere in Germany, let alone have regional varieties from there. Alternately 30 seconds of effort would have found you the original edits by the vandal (that's how long it took me). When you are repeatedly reverting edits, it seems like that's the minimum standard of care that would be expected.
Doggy54321, it seems quite clearly a hoax according to the policy as none of your arguments stand up - it's a deliberate falsehood (though presumably on the part of the OP rather than you, I'm not claiming bad faith here), it's factually incorrect, and the source is made up. If somebody were to edit Statue of Liberty to say it's in Timbaktu and wrote up a citation from the Bible, that would still count as a hoax, and if somebody else reverted that, I would not start an edit war with them without spending at least 30 seconds on it.
I will now be fixing the article again, if that's alright with you.
