Named by Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?) naturalist and explorer, on 16 June 1845, after Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792-1855) NSW Surveyor-General 1828-55. Refer L. Leichhardt. Journal of an overland expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. London, 1847, p.292. The Mitchell is probably the same river as that named by Jan Carstenz (1598?-16??) Dutch merchant and navigator in 1623 as Vereenighde River. Refer G.C. Ingleton. Matthew Flinders: navigator and chartmaker. Guilford (UK), 1986, p.209.
