Moran as an Alias[edit]

Question about article clean-up: Two names on the list of notable Morans, Bugs Moran and Mr. Moran, are not actually Morans. Moran is an alias they used. Given that the article is about the family name and it's lineage, aren't those two names a little misleading? Twovices (talk) 23:00, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non Irish origins[edit]

The entry assumes Irish origin when there is ample evidence for Hebraic origin too. The name is both fore and surname in Israel. There is a kibutz Moran. Prior to 1880 there was a large Moran family in Kovno, Lituania who were exiles from Judea/Israel of ancient times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.168.30.124 (talk) 00:51, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to the website forebears (https://forebears.io/surnames/moran) a large majority of people with the last name Moran (and Morán) live in Spanish speaking countries (some 245,000) or the US that has a large Latino population, not counting some 40,000 in India. Only some 37,000 live on the British isles. This indicates a Spanish origin of the majority of the bearers. People who write about the origin of last names with a limit horizon that only sees English speaking countries tend to ascribe names to an Irish origin even when the vast majority of bearers originates from elsewhere. This and and the Hebrew origin, (some 873 bearers in Israel, even though maybe partly of Judaeo-Spanish origin) should be added. —Menischt (talk) 15:28, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
