Categories
[edit]I am uncertain how or if to Categorize Soller as to religion and ethnicity. I am unfamiliar with how this is handled. I am inclined to not Categorize him due to lack of information.
It would be common to speculate that he's Jewish simply because of his believably German Jewish name, however I have had people assume I am Jewish simply because of their unfamiliarity with my name. My name isn't even German much less Jewish and I am not Jewish by any standard. So certainly I am very familiar with how unusable that kind of speculation is.
Soller even credits R. A. Fisher with inspiring and educating him in population genetics.[1] (Fisher is a strange case of a Nazi who was on the other side of the war, an Anglican, and outspokenly continued in that opinion even after their downfall and humiliation. I think Soller is just being honest that Fisher is important to the entire field, irrespective of his other opinions.) On the other hand Soller has moved his family permanently to Israel and has been a professor at several institutions ever since. On the other other hand I am acquainted with someone who is also certainly non-Jewish, not an Israeli citizen, and managed to obtain permanent employment in Israel. She has in-demand talents and Israel may make exceptions for that – Soller would qualify even more than she does.
Given Soller's complete silence[1] on the question I think we remain silent but I've never been in this position on a WP page before. Invasive Spices (talk) 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- KoA what is your opinion on this? Invasive Spices (talk) 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- If there aren't sources making it clear what his religion or ethnicity was, then no need to include those categories. That's ultimately what it would boil down to, and there's nothing wrong with being silent on those subjects. Maybe one thing to keep an eye out for if his family recently immigrated to the US before he was born would be to briefly mention who his parents were/where they were from, etc. if sources go into that. 22:32, 19 February 2022 KoA

come from? Anyhow. The autobiography does say that – unlike my parents – his mother-in-law was an immigrant. She was from Lithuania. So I did consider that probable but not certain. Invasive Spices (talk) 25 March 2022 (UTC)- The point was that if his parents had been in the US for quite awhile already, then it's not really worth mentioning. If being a recent immigrant family was relevant to his upbringing, then there could be some WP:WEIGHT to the idea. KoA (talk) 20:30, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Humor
[edit]I intended to make a tremendously hilarious joke. Further examination suggests that I intended to imply that a certain other editor was in a conflict with myself for the aforesaid reasons. That would be be quite egregious if so but that was not occurring. I did not intend to give that idea but that could have been one natural misinterpretation.
